Smallfish Mailout 19/09/05
Well, hello there everyone!
After a couple of weeks of computer problems we're back with a massive =
vengeance this week. Seriously, I've not witnessed quite so many good =
things in such a short space of time for quite a while! I'll keep this =
bit brief so that you can get right on to the website to have a look at =
the bits. Ssamples and scans to come tomorrow due to high quantity of =
new stuff... although that won't stop you with some of the gems we have =
on offer!
Planet Delsin Sampler EP
After a seemingly huge wait, the sampler EP from the forthcoming =
compilation is here! Tracks from Aroy Dee, $tinkworx and Dimension 5 (as =
D5) are included and, by gum, they are hot! Deep, Detroit-laced vines =
with melody and groove aplenty... this is the real deal and is simply =
essential.
Loads of other Dutch goodies!
New DJ Yoav B. on Wabi Sabi... New Concrete Soul (aka Simon Hartley of =
Wild Planet plus cohort Kenny Black) Ep on Finest Blend... New M>O>S =
from Aroy Dee with a wonderful Vince Watson mix... plus the brilliant =
new Digital Soul release, also by Concrete Soul... seriously good future =
Techno-Funk.
Steve Roden + Chessmachine on Line - now in!
Two new Line releases from Steve Roden ['Airforms' - LINE_022] and =
Chessmachine (aka Richard Chartier & Coh) ['Live In Los Angeles' - =
LINE_023]. Deep and sculptural contemporary digital minimalism par =
excellence. Serious sounds for the more abstractedly minded (like =
myself!).
Loads of Kompakt related goodness!
Robag Wruhme remixes on Musik Krause... Matias Aguayo on Kompakt Pop... =
Bolcher on Sub Static... Fenin on Echocord... Ultrakurt on Found =
Sound... Ultrakurt on Minibar... John Tejada on Palette... plenty more =
where those came from... just check!
Various - Small Melodies - Spekk - Due in this week
The absolutely delightful compilation on Japanese label Spekk is due in =
this week and let me tell you this much... it's sublime! A real =
who's-who of deep and melodic minimalist Electronica from artists such =
as Herve Boghossian, Taylor Deupree, Oren Ambarchi, Mondii, Stephan =
Mathieu, Sogar and many, many more. Truly brilliant and, of course, =
immaculately packaged in a silver printed, over-sized CD package. Don't =
miss this when it drops!
Broadcast, Devendra Banhart + Black Dice new albums
Eagerly anticipated album releases from all three of these artists =
finally surface this week and they all more than live up to =
expectations! Really quite close to being classics in all cases, those =
after something folky, retro or psychedelic but electronic will really =
need to seek these out to check them as soon as... Big releases all =
round!
OK, there are loads more and I really could go on, but I'll stop right =
now and let you check it for yourselves.=20
Have a wicked week and take good care.
Peace.
The Fish.

New Releases (Vinyl): Electronica
BLACK DICE - BROKEN EAR RECORD - DFA - LP (DFAEMI2148LP)
Black Dice might technically be on a major label these days, but
don't think for a moment any kind of musical compromise has taken
place. These are dense, experimental soundscapes and perhaps as
strange as ambient can get (i think it just about falls into the
category as Brian Eno defined it). Actually, this could well be
their finest moment to date - this is hypnotic and compelling
stuff that fans of their spiritual brothers Animal Collective
should really enjoy. What's ironic is this could well end up selling
a lot more than some of the guff major labels try and force upon
us, and quite right too. Black Dice on EMI? It's the future of
Rock 'N' Roll!
BROADCAST - TENDER BUTTONS - WARP - LP (WARPLP136)
Broadcast have consistently produced excellent albums over the
years, and despite trimming down to a two-piece are sounding as
strong as ever. There's a slightly more stripped-down feel to
this new material, giving it a slightly Velvet Underground feel
to these ears but it's the songs that stand out, and this album
has plenty of those. Extremely highly recommended, buy with utter
confidence.
BUILD AN ARK - REMIXES - PLUG RESEARCH - 12" (PLG59)
Remixes here from the likes of Jneiro Jarel, Daedelous, Nobody
& Dimlite. The daedelous & the Dimlite win for me hands down.
Abstract yet soulful with their feet firmly in the electronica
camp. a recommended listening experience......
MAGNETOPHONE - ...AND MAY YOUR LAST WORDS... - 4AD - 7" (AD2505)
Killer new 7" from Magnetophone that's as limited as it is =
impressive.
Collaborating with the Fence Collective's HMS Ginafore and King
Creosote, this is a wondrous piece of highly atmospheric folktronica
in the Static Caravan / Tunng / The Books scheme of things that
should not be overlooked. The B-side is something more pure =
electronica
based / ISAN-esque but excellent nonetheless. Best Magnetophone
for a long, long time!
MARC HELLNER - MARRIAGES - PEACEFROG - LP (PFG068)
How interesting that the vinyl of this has a rather different,
equestrian based artwork (again)! A few weeks ago, we reviewed
a mini-album by Marc Hellner and this full-lengther complements
that perfectly. Co-produced by Telefon Tel Aviv, this is a lush
slice of semi-shoegazing electronic pop that has a definite Ulrich
Schnauss and/or Khonnor feel about it, not to mention some of
the Resonant artists (to these ears, for example Blindfold or
Port Royal). Seriously mellow, definitely recommended.
TIM 'LOVE' LEE - AGAINST NATURE - TUMMY TOUCH - LP (TUCH114LP)
Tim 'Love' Lee is often an artist to be discovered with his tongue
firmly planted in his cheek but this is a bizarre one even by
his standards. Tim has subtitled "Against Nature" by describing
it as "Electronic tone-scapes featuring members of The New York
Aquarian Men's Drum Workshop", and it's certainly one of his more
experimental works, perhaps a bit like letting Matthew Herbert
loose on a roomful of Moogs and then getting Fennesz to remix
it! A real curio and one you'll really have to listen to to =
understand
properly.
VENETIAN SNARES - MEATHOLE - PLANET MU - 2xLP (ZIQ099LP)
Oooh, heck, it's the Snares! I have to say i do prefer Venetian
Snares when he's on Planet Mu - generally speaking his material
is a little more varied and interesting when he's on Mr Paradinas's
label. Yes, this is pretty brutal (obviously), with lots of frantic,
amphetamine-fuelled drill 'n' bass beats, sci-fi effects and =
distortion
a-plenty, but with more of a Squarepusher / Aphex feel than his
Peaceoff releases (for example). Wow, wot a rush, etc!
WARLOCK - FULL TILT - RAG & BONE - 12" (TOTTER10)
Nice! Is this grime or has that sub-genre mutated once again?
This has a bit of everything on the go. A slightly Aphex-y beat,
ragga-y bass, cow bells, slamming percussion, and a suitable high
tempo means it should equally get all sorts of crowds moving about.
The B-side is more traditional (if that's not a contradiction
in terms) grime gear, but seriously good production values and
infectious riffs make mincemeat out of most of the competition.
New Releases (Vinyl): Techno / Electro
ALEX UNDER - DISPOSITIVOS DE MI GRANJA - TRAPEZ - 12" (TRAPEZ055)
I think we all probably know by now just how good Alex Under is
and this full length album is an indespensible release in so many
ways. It's not just the stripped down and incredibly funky nature
of the Techno that does it... there's an incredibly satisfying
range of sounds on here to satisfy even the most jaded palette.
7 tracks of pure brilliance that comes highly recommended.
ALTER EGO - TUBEACTION - KLANG - 12" (KLANG95)
The main point of interest here is the Losoul remix of the title
track. He puts together a wickedly strippd version that uses crunchy
8-bit sounding hi hats and percussion to convey a minimal, funky
and surprisingly fluid flava. Killer groove. The flip has two
ultra rough cuts in a typical Alter Ego style. Another goodie
from Klang.
ANDERS ILAR - NIGHTWIDTH - NARITA RECORDS - 12" (NRT06)
With a plethora of highly-applauded releases on Audio.NL, Echocord
and Shitkatapult behind him, the prospect of Anders Ilar on Narita
was always quite a mouthwatering one, but let me tell you my =
friends,
this rocks. The opening track is an absolute killer - a phat,
throbbing beat, deep, shuffling effects and wicked sci-fi chords
mean you're gonna be hearing this one for months to come! That's
not to say the remain three tracks are a disappointment, far from
it. "Rourel" is seriously dark and eerie, and just as strong.
The seriously Aphex / early Autechre-esque / Mathew Jonson feel
of "A Day Ago" (apt!), and the Kompakt Pop Ambient style of the
closing track should see this crossing over, too. An absolutely
exceptional record.
ANJA SCHNEIDER & SEBO K - SIDE LEAPS - MOBILEE - 12" (MOBILEE003)
A great team-up here which sees Mobilee releasing their best EP
to date. Two tracks that are minimal, yet full of grooviness and
a with a nicely Electro sound to the basslines. Musically it's
very twinkly and features some gorgeous chords to give it a smooth
and tuneful feel whilst still keeping it very much a dancefloor
piece. Electro-House? I guess so, but of the highest order. Check.
AROY DEE - SHIFTS - M>O>S RECORDINGS - 12" (M>O>S0004)
Possibly the strongest release yet on M>O>S Recordings. Aroy Dee
provides a sublime groove that's filled to brimming with a =
lusciousness
that will absolutely hypnotize you. A beautiful blend of House
and Techno with a nod to the old-school. Vince Watson turns in
a trademark mix with clatterin 909 percussion, a heavy, yet =
mid-paced
beat and a tribal feel coupled wth Detroit vibes. A supreme EP
that's as deep as you'd ever want it to be. Highly recommeded.
ATOM TM PRESENTS... - ACID - EVOLUTION 1988 - 2003 VOL. 1 - LOGISTICS =
- 2xLP (LOG46LP)
Blistering collection of Acid tracks spanning the years 1988 to
2003 all compiled up by Atom Heart. Phresh Phantasy, DJ Roxy,
Atom himself, XOX Crew, MC Unknown, DJ Marco Favatti, 21 Brothers
and Phreak all deliver killer 303 grooves with a range of toughness
and rawness. Something to suit everyone really. Just check out
the samples and see how wicked it is. Class.
BASSTARDS, THE - EP - TUNING SPORK FAMILY AFFAIR - 12" (TSFA02)
Tuning Spork Family Affair deliver their second release and it's
another doozie. 4 tracks of perky, very lively Tech-Funk with
acidic sounds, killer beats and a wonky flava that will be very
familiar to fans of the other Tuning Spork material. Low-down,
funky music with high production values and a real dancefloor
feel. Wicked.
BLACK DICE - SMILING OFF (PROMO DOUBLE PACK: DFA & LUOMO MIXES) - DFA =
- 2x12" (DFAEMIDJ2150)
This set of mixes is an absolute triumph. The DFA mix is a storming
funk wig-out even by their standards. The drums are so heavy that
it borders on Krautrock but fear not, this is 100% dancefloor
material. Flip over for a lush minimal house reworking by that
pioneer of the genre, Luomo (aka Vladislav Delay) - one of his
best tracks in a few years, this is warm, musical, chilled and
very groovy. The second 12" is a rather different affair - a mix
by "ZZ Pot" is abrasive and experimental, almost a bit Alec =
Empire-ish,
and this is backed by the hypnotic, swirling original - hardly
dancefloor compatible but wicked nonetheless. Needless to say,
we don't have many of these promo double packs so act swiftly
and all that.
BOLCHER - ARDEN EP - SUB STATIC - 12" (SUS_49)
A surprisingly heavy sounding record from Substatic with a militant,
stomping 4/4 beat that's a bit of a rocker. Keeps it all very
Sub Static, but with an almost progressive feel to the way it
subtly builds up over time. Splendid stuff from a very reliable
label.
CHRIS CARRIER & DJ WILD - ACID ENEMA - CATWASH - 12" (CATWASH002)
What an extremely busy man Chris Carrier is. Here he teams up
with DJ Wild for some acidic House / Techno fun and games. Coupled
with a nicely tribal feel and some great techy sounds this is
both useable and engaging. Hypnotic gear from this tip top producer.
Check.
CHRISTOPHER + RAPHAEL JUST - DISCO 128 - COMBINATION - 12" (CORE033)
Retro, fun, bouncy, lively sounds from this two man team-up. Chris
and Raphael get it going with a nicely progressive build-up and
a selection of authentic sounding old-school sounds and basslines.
Kicking beats top it off. Electro-Disco of the very best kind.
CONCRETE SOUL COLLECTIVE - ELECTRONICAL FUNK WITH SOUL - DIGITAL SOUL =
- 12" (DS007)
Two release from the Concrete Soul crew in a couple of weeks!
This one sees Simon Hartley and Kenny Black once again delivering
some pure Techno soul music. Slightly more Electro-based than
the Finest Blend EP, but still aching with warmth and depth. =
Stunningly
authentic beats and little moments of melody really capture the
spirit of an age gone by but which, let's face it, we all still
love! Killer sounds. Highly recommended.
DAN BERKSON PRESENTS SYNTHO - CONCEPT EP - MOOD MUSIC - 12" =
(MOODMUSIC035)
This is a really nice two-tracker of Electro, House and Techno
all mixed up together to provide a very clubby sound throughout.
It's melodic, it's old-school and it features some great retro
basslines and rock solid beats that'll carry you along in a very
hypnotic fashion. Lovely chords and sounds are the icing on the
cake and, although you might find it a bit tame at times, it's
really worth checking out.
DJ YOAV B. - POWERHOUSE EP - WABI SABI - 12" (WABI1002)
Yoav B's own Wabi Sabi label comes good with another fabulous
release which blurs the boundaries between Tech and House with
a great deal of panache. Deep, almost Carl Craig-esque grooves
that roll out really rather nicely in a Motor City kind of style.
Hypnotic vibes on all 3 tracks with some deliciously put together
strings and stabs. Lush, mid-paced and sure to get people wiggling.
Brilliant and essential.
DK7 - WHERE'S THE FUN? - OUTPUT - 12" (OPR81)
Last week we gave you a single-sided promo affair with a Jesper
Dahlback mix, this week here's the original plus remixes from
Sten (Dialrec, Sender) and Sweet Light (with whom i'm not so =
familiar).
It's not a bad effort, really - the original is a perfectly pleasant
piece of mid-tempo electro pop and the Sten remix is as strong
as you'd expect, bearing little resemblance to the original. The
Sweet Light mix is a pumped-up electro house fest. It's Output,
'nuff said.
DUPLEX - FICTIONAL FREQUENCY - FRANTIC FLOWERS - 12" (FS005)
One of those brilliant Clone related records on Frantic Flowers
that keeps it absolutey authentic and true to the Detroit Techno
sound. Duplex have a long history of delivering stunning, upbeat
and beautifully layered tracks that will roll on the dancefloor
but have a depth and warmth that's incredibly pleasing. Awesome
stuff that comes highly recommended. Clear vinyl too!
FENIN - BACKBORD EP - ECHOCORD - 12" (ECHOCORD015)
Aah. Echocord. Still doing it after 15 releases. This is another
top offering from Fenin and sees him diversifying his sound once
again. The Dub is there but there's a wonderfully melodic =
Electronica
style that rears its head. It doesn't always have to be 4/4, you
know, and this is absolute proof of that. Funky, deep, ultimately
well produced and an essential for fans of the label. Quality.
FOR DISCO ONLY - 485 U - FOR DISCO ONLY - 12" (FORDISCOONLY2)
Rumour has it this is by Villalobos. I'm not sure about that,
but it certainly has a very appealing minimalist style coupled
with a very hypnotic arrangement. Low-down bass sounds with a
very subby feel plus flat, grooving beats and some wicked sound
design make this a sure-fire winner for fans of Perlon, Telegraph
etc. Absolutely one to check out immediately.
FRIVOLOUS - XXX EP - PROPTRONIX - 12" (PROPTRONIX12)
Frivolous finds a natural home here on Proptronix as he's always
had a slightly obscure sound to his tracks. This is taken to its
logical extreme here with a four tracker of fun and games. For
the heads, there's a straight 4/4 track that is up there with
the best of them... stripped, funkygear with a slightly oddball
approach. It's from this point on that things get a tad more silly.
Heavy schaffel, amusing vocals, quirky arrangements... it's all
here in abundance. Quite mental, but very satisfying indeed.
GABRIEL ANANDA - TAI NASHA NO KAROSHA REMIXES - KARMAROUGE - 12" =
(KR13)
Top selection of remixes taken from Gabriel's full-length album.
Includes splendid versions from Areal's Metope, Boxer's Frank
Martiniq and even a mix from Gabriel himself. Wicked stuff in
a very Cologne style with some poppiness, but mostly gnarly, =
grooving
Tech sounds. Check.
GUI.TAR - CAN"T STOP - CARELESS - 12" (LESS001)
First release from Careless and it's a stripped-back and minimal
slab of really engaging Tech fun. Kind of like some of the =
Villalobos
stuff or maybe Luciano with it's low-end beats and basslines.
Couple that with some deliciously melodic chords and strings and
variety of tightly edited clicks and you've got a winning =
combination.
Fans of Found Sound, Telegraph etc. should investigate this =
immediately.
Solid.
HIEM - FRIENDZ / RADIO RADIO - ATLANTIC - 12" (AA003)
Simple 80's concious electro pop here by Hiem who seem to ring
a bell with me although we have not had anything by them before.
the flip sounds a little more like electro boogie electro to me.
Until the vocal turn up. People are gonna love this, me not being
one of them im afraid. not that its bad, its just not my bag.
but what do i know.....
HUG - THE ANGRY GHOST - K2 - 12" (K2/02)
Hug is none other than John Dahlback in disguise and here he sheds
his more Housey side to create a deep and minimalistic set of
tracks for Kompakt's new K2 offshoot. Wicked sound design and
tons of splendid acidic noises plus some tough, dancefloor =
orientated
beats make this something of a winner. Recommended.
JACKSON & HIS COMPUTER BAND - SMASH - WARP - 2xLP (WARPLP137)
An apt title, as not only should this be a smash hit but it does
rather smash genres together... imagine Daft Punk meets Vitalic
meets the cutting-up skills and beat-driven brutality of Aphex
in a bad mood and you're getting there. In theory, this stuff
should be a b*tch to dance to, but just you try keeping still
- it's an absolute beast. It takes some getting used to, but trust
me, this is one of the good time party records of the year. Wicked.
JIRKU / JUDGE - WATCHING YOU - ONI.TOR - 12" (ONI.TOR44)
Very useful four track EP from the double team of Jirkku and Judge.
Bumping Techno grooves with a suprisingly upbeat feel (considering
Jirku's normal dubbier material) with bouncy beats and an =
underground,
choppy feel to the sounds. EAsy to play and great fun to shamble
about to (well, in my case, anyway), this is one to check.
JOHN TEJADA & JUSTIN MAXWELL - INFECTED / 100% POST-CONSUMER - PALETTE =
- 12" (PAL-37)
Rip-roaring new EP from the combined talents of label owner and
Techno producer extraordinaire, John Tejada, plus his cohort Justin
Maxwell. Rolling, technical sounds with some phat and fairly acidic
sounds and basslines. Minimal, but not too stripped and full of
quality dancefloor appeal. Pretty much up there with 'Paranoid'
in my opinion. Class.
JUAN MACLEAN, THE - GIVE ME EVERY LITTLE THING - DFA - 7" =
(DFAEMI72149)
The A-side is typical Juan Maclean fare - more eighties than the
eighties decidely lo-fi and raw sounding funky, punky dance music;
it will make you shuffle about, and that's exactly what it sets
out to do. The flip is an-remarkable bit of ambient music - =
something
that will undoubtedly end up on some dreadful chill-out compilation!
JUAN MACLEAN, THE - GIVE ME EVERY LITTLE THING - DFA - 12" =
(DFAEMI2149)
Four mixes of the title track - original, Xpress 2, Cajmere and
Putsch 79 mixes. You know what you are getting with The Juan
- retro sounding dance music that owes much to the eighties.=20
All four mixes keep the punky, funky thing going on plus there
is a hint of "old school" electro and shouty vocals (in differing
degrees). =20
KARRI O. - ROCKSOUL - PLONG - 12" (PLONG!17)
The main track here is a toothsome number with a funky, elastic
sounding retro bassline and a sort of Electro / House crossover
sound. Very accessible, but very good as well. The flip sees a
far more underground feel taking control and a really nice =
minimalism
that should see it garnering quite a few fans. Good stuff, then,
generally and well worth a check.
MARK HENNING - FINAL SNATCH EP - FRANKIE REC - 12" (FRANKIEREC10)
Best Frankie release for a while here with four superb tracks
by Mark Henning (previously found on Freude Am Tanzen). Deep,
flat, funked-out Tech grooves with a nicely wiggly minimalism
and bassy sounds. Rough, ready and made for making people dance.
An absolute corker!
MATIAS AGUAYO - DE PAPEL - KOMPAKT - 12" (KOMPOP9)
Quite a few people having been touting this single (and the =
forthcoming
album) by Closer Music's Matias Aguayo as the next big thing from
Kompakt and on the evidence of this it's not hard to see why.
He's blended up such a deep set of sounds that it transcends simply
being Techno, House or Cologne Pop. There's a real emotion behind
the tracks and, although they groove, they are nowhere near being
disposable like a lot of this kind of music. Simply brilliant
and with a selection of funky and minimal remixes it's a surefire
winner. Deeply excellent.
METAMATICS AND JOHN FOXX - FREE ROBOT - HYDROGEN DUKEBOX - 12" =
(DUKE140DJV)
Wasn't sure whether this collaboration would work or not, but
by 'eck, it's a real winner. This is an excellent dancefloor track
that's neither electro nor techno nor electronica yet strangely
all three! Several pairs of ears pricked up when we played this
instore and i'm sure yours will too. The B-sides are a little
more low-key but overall all three tracks seriously get the job
done and then some. Top notch.=20
MISC. - LIKE MORNING IN YOUR EYES - SENDER - CD (SEND052CD)
Blimey! Another full-length album from Misc. They certainly are
busy these days and, guess what? There's not a filler on here.
Honest to goodness pumping grooves with that 'Knarz' flava and
dirty, dirty basslines. There are lighter, more minimal moments,
but to be honest it's all about the dancefloor tracks. Solid,
workable... excellent stuff.
MURAT TEPELI FEAT. PROSUMER - ON A RIDE - PLAYHOUSE - 12" =
(PLAYHOUSE110)
Prosumer gives us an ultra-deep House base whilst Murat provides
the vocals that ride over the top. Moody, slow-paced tracks with
tweaking percussion and a bass-havy bottom end that will rock
most floors. It's a subtle beast, though, and has a subliminal
flow to it that grows over time. There are a couple of tougher,
slightly more obvious dancefloor versions, so you basically get
all bases covered. A wicked relase from Playhouse.
PAN/TONE - SANS ADORE - VOLTMUSIK - 12" (VOLT13)
A really good release from Pan/Tone which harks back to his =
eearlier,
dubbier tracks on the main cut. All crispy beats and lots of =
low-end.
Jeff Milligan turns in a splendid version with his customary =
jerkiness
and funk, whilst Falko Brocksieper and M.I.A. of Sub Static fame
give us a chilled out but still funking Cologne-style mix. There's
another track as well that features vocals and a cheeky Electro
/ Housey kind of style. An all round versatile EP. Check.
PHONOGENIC VS FREESTYLE MAN - SUPERCOLLIDE EP - MOODMUSIC LIMITED - =
12" (MOODLIM-009)
Those Moodmusic Limited releases are as strong as ever. This =
features
two super tracks. Phonogenic deliver a a cracking Electro-based
House cut with superb retro basslines and the kind of stabbing,
synthy chords that made the '80';s what they were. Freestyle man
opts for a more traditional, late '80's house sound that could
have easily been a Trax release. Excellent stuff.
ROBAG WRUHME - WORTKABULAR RMX - LUCIANO + TONI NEUMANN - MUSIK KRAUSE =
- 12" (MK014)
Hypnotic freak-therapy for your ears and body here. Luciano and
Tobi Neumann both deliver superb interpretations of Robag's =
original.
Deep, funked-out Tech sounds with incredibly intense attention
to detail and the sort of crispy rhythms that we've come to expect
from this exceptional label. Essential.=20
SLEEPARCHIVE - INFRARED GLOW - SLEEPARCHIVE - 12" (ZZZ04)
It's that time, once again, for a minimalistic Techno bomb from
the Sleeparchive crew. Four tracks of finely honed, stripped-down
perfection that has a heads-down hypnotic flava and some of the
most well realised sound design for this form of music in a long,
long time. Mid-paced rhythms, reverb heavy noises... truly superb.
The fourth and best release in the series so far. Killer and =
completely
unmissable.
SPEEDY J / GEORGE ISSAKIDIS - COLLABS 400 - NOVA MUTE - 12" =
(12NOMU156)
The latest in this series sees Jochem Paap teaming up with George
Issakidis. It's not as high octane as you might expect, but still
pretty banging, with a phat old production and a lot of welly
/ bottom-end in the mix. Definitely one for the Nova heads.=20
SPIRIT - FATHOM - LOST - 12" (COS30)
Very straight-up techno affair from these mysterious LOST-associated
producers. If you are familiar with their long-running party series,
then you'll know what kind of sound the name stands for. Quite
heavy, tribal, and very driving techno, that always has this =
monotone,
stoic, and very hypnotic feel. With the last few releases they
now started to always sneak a haunting ambient track ala old Axis
material on there, perfectly suitable for those big break-downs
during a peak-time techno set. Shouldn't be missed in the working
Techno-DJ's crate...
STAR YOU STAR ME - SWEET THINGS - MOOD MUSIC - 12" (MOODMUSIC034)
Slightly too commercial for my tastes, this has a very =
floor-pleasing
sound that's somewhere between ordinary dance music and a more
Electro-based sound that's considerably more like the other Mood
Music material. The main point of interest, I guss, is the Ian
Pooley mix which maxes out the clubbiness. Definitely worth =
checking,
but certainly nothing out of the ordinary.
ULTRAKURT - EN SHORT EP - FOUND SOUND - 12" (FOUND04)
Probably the strongest release so far frm Found Sound. Ultrakurt
seems totally at home with stripped-down, minimal grooves like
this and he imbues it with such an irresistable groove that it's
impossible not to be moved by it. Stirling stuff. The flip has
another killer little Tech track plus, the piece de resistance,
the Fusiphorm remix... a staggeringly advanced track that rips
out the sound and replaces it with so much space and depth but
acres of dancefloor appeal. Wickedly good indeed.
ULTRAKURT - LE CRICK DE BAMAKO EP - MINIBAR - 12" (MB001)
Well, there's been quite a bit of hype about Ultrakurt's new =
material
and here's the Minibar release. Unsurprisingly, it's a clickin'
good slab of minimalistic and extremely funky Techno par excellence
which fans of Robag Wruhme, Telegraph, Found Sound and Microcosm
are going to absolutely love. The kind of grooves that just make
you want to dance. Absolute quality.
VARIOUS - WE WERE FATHERS, BROTHERS, HUSBANDS AND SONS, WE W - =
MEMBRANE - 12" (MEM006)
First 12" release I've seen on Membrane and it's a corking white
vinyl slab with tracks from Joseph Garber, Anders Ilar, Tomas
Nordstrom and Rutherford. Killer Acid Techno and Electro grooves
with some rough and dirty production that really cuts through.
Anders Ilar's track is particularly splendid and features a gnarly
303 line that rocks. Cracking EP. Recommended.
VARIOUS - PLANET DELSIN SAMPLER EP - DELSIN - 12" (50DSR/VAR-EP1)
One of the most eagerly anticipated Techno records of the year
so far, and it reeally isn't hard to see why. Delsin have reached
their 50th release and with this sampler EP and the forthcoming
full-length compilation they've come up with an absolute beauty
that delves so deep into the Detroit sound that you'd be forgiven
for thinking it was from the Motor City! The tracks on the sampler
are from D5 (formerly Dimension 5 aka John Harvey), Aroy Dee and
$tinkworx. Just an incredible selection of funked-up, deep as
hell Tech and House sounds that are full of futuristic grooves
but with a nod to the old-school. D5's 'Floatation Tank' is =
particularly
stunning and features a dense layer of chords and an awesome rolling
bassline... pure warmth and beauty with pure grooves. A staggering
EP and so essential it almost hurts.
VARIOUS - CONCRETE SOUL FUTURE INSTRUMENTALS - FINEST BLEND - 12" =
(FINE1205004)
Wicked, wicked release from Finest Blend which sees the Concrete
Soul crew delivering tracks of pure Techno and House with a purist,
Motor City funk that's just stunning. Wild Planet's Simon Hartley
and Kenny Black team up under a number of guises to give us some
serious grooves with warmth, depth, flava and, most importantly,
a lush Detroit feel. Be it 4/4 or Electro based, it's all perfectly
in place and easily tweaks my bits. I have a strong suspicion
it'll be tweaking yours as well! Essential.
VENOM 18 - MYSTERY ORGANISATION - STRANGE LIFE RECORDS - 12" (SLR005)
I believe that this could well be Legowelt's own label and, by
gum, if he hasn't come up with a rip-roaring 7 track EP. Varies
between Creme -style Electro-Disco grooves to a more ambient,
soundscapey, but infintely retro style. Along the way there are
some deeply excellent Electro tracks. I honestly think this is
one of the best records of this style for quite some time so I'd
definitely recommend you have a listen as soon as you can.
Restocks (Vinyl): Techno / Electro
SHYZA MINELLI - TAKE IT BACK - TUNING SPORK - 12" (SPORK13)
SHYZA'S SECOND EP FOR TUNING SPORK IS AS INSTANTLY GRATIFYING
AS THE FIRST WITH IT'S CHEEKY, ELECTRONIC SOUND AND FUNKED OUT
BEATS. ALMOST HAS A DISCO FEEL TO THE WAY IT WORKS AND THERE ARE
DEFINITELY HOUSE INFLUENCES GOING ON, BUT IT MANAGES TO REMAIN
TECHNO AT HEART WITH IT'S INCREDIBLY CRISP PRODUCTION VALUES.
TOP NOTCH.
VARIOUS - NO COMPROMISE - CONTEXTERRIOR - 12" (CNTXT12)
4 track EP from Jay Haze, Fark, Dapayk and Matt John. As you'd
expect it's the crispest minimal Techno around with some super-fine
production and deep, bass heavy beats. Clicked-out sounds and
glitchy little rhythmic edits provide all the movement you'll
need on this very hypnotic record. Recommended.
WIGHNOMY BROTHERS - 3 FACHMISCH EP - FREUDE AM TANZEN - 12" (FAT019)
THE RETURN (AFTER HAVING BEEN ABSENT FOR A WHILE) OF THE =
EVER-RELIABLE
WIGHNOMY BROS AND LET ME TELL YOU, THE A-SIDE IS JUST HAVIN' IT!
THROBBING DEEP BASS AND A SUITABLY BEEFY RHYTHM SHOULD SEE THIS
ROCKING CROWDS TO THE ABSOLUTE MAX - A TERRIFIC TRACK. ON THE
B-SIDE, SOMETHING MORE MELODIC AND LESS WEIGHTY BUT STILL STRONG,
WITH THE SET CONCLUDING WITH SOMETHING ALMOST RESEMBLING VERY
TWISTED BREAKBEAT. TRUST ME, YOU WILL WANNA HEAR THIS ONE!
New Releases (Vinyl): US Techno / Electro
AUDION - JUST F**KING - SPECTRAL - 12" (SPC-30)
Everyone loves Audion at the moment and this precursor to the
forthcoming album is a nothing short of a beast. Matthew Dear's
original version is a gnarly slice of minimal, Chicago influenced
Techno with a wonderful sense of not too over-the-top bangingness
that's perfect for the harder dancefloors. Alter Egos' Roman Flugel
turns in a rough and ready mix that ups the rawness in a big way...
Just what you'd expect. Quality.
SEXUAL HARRASSMENT - I NEED A FREAK - JDC - 12" (JDC0116)
Classic slice of '80's new wave from David Payton. A hypnotic,
early Electro groove with sparse synth sounds and basslines plus
the 'I need a freak' refrain to top it off. Instrumental, short
version and long version are all included. A great reissue.
VARIOUS - THE HOUSE OF MUZIQUE - MUZIQUE - 12" (MUZIQUE-003)
5 track stormer from Steve Poindexter's Muzique imprint. Allen
Wright, Melvin Oliphant, Chris Underwood, Saturn V and Sun God
(aka Hieroglyphic Being) all turn in rough and tough Chicago tracks
that still keep a lot of soul as well as being really rather edgy.
Muzique rarely put records out, but when they do they're always
essential!
Restocks (Vinyl): US Techno / Electro
KONRAD BLACK & GHOSTMAN - MEDUSA SMILE - WAGON REPAIR - 12" (WAG006)
Big new track from Mathew Jonson's Wagon Repair label which sees
Konrad Black reprising his fantastic first EP with this killer
two tracks. Deep and dark Techno / House grooves with the sort
of Electro influences to the bassline and percussion that this
label excells at. A nice, subtle vocal sits on top of the track
on one side and adds a layer of depth and moodiness which really
suits the hypnotic grooves. Top notch gear.
LUSINE - INSIDE/OUT EP - GHOSTLY INTERNATIONAL - 12" (GI-47)
The long awaited new Lusine EP is a beautiful piece of work all
round. His trademark production skills are very much in place
and the flat, funky, but incredibly intricate rhythms are, to
be honest, completely superb. Musicall it's incredibly strong
as well with wonderfully dense chords and melodic interludes.
Couple that with a couple of vocal moments and you've got a very,
very tasty record all round. Highly recommended.
New Releases (Vinyl): House
DEXTER - D-FUNKED - CLONE - 12" (C#39)
This isn't what i expected, which is why you'll find it in the
house category and not the electro section. What we have here
is smooth, deep house music with a really lovely, summery sound,
phat production and lots of musicality. The overall feel reminds
me a little of Faze Action at their peak. There's a sneaky l'il
jackin' electro / house crossover number tucked away at the end,
but overall this is one that fans of our blue corner should be
made very aware of! Excellent work.=20
EDDIE FOWLKES - ISLAND - CITY BOY - 12" (CBM-0019)
A little corker from Eddie Fowlkes on his own City Boy imprint.
One of his best tunes for some time this and a great example of
how to make House music funky, accessible, tribal and yet still
incredibly deep. Both tracks are wonderfully smooth but with a
slightly rough and raw edge that gives them that real Motor City
feel. Top stuff.
OMAR-S - OASIS LP - FXHE - 2xLP (FXHE15)
Fabulous double pack from one of Detroit's finest new-school =
producers.
A seven track selection of versions of 'Oasis' which come in a
variety of flavours. From ultra deep, chordy House to a more =
stripped-down
and minimalistic Tech vibe. Production is as raw as you'd expect
and there's plenty here to keep you going. A superb collection
of tunes that would sem to be something of an essential release.
Just get it quickly, that's all!
PANASH - UNICORN - ATAVISME - 12" (ATA005)
AAAH, A PEPE BRADOCK PRODUCTION. VERY FINE IT IS TOO. THE MAIN
TRACK HAS DEEP, FUNKY, TECHY HOUSE FLAVA WITH A DEFINITE 'BURNING'
INFLUENCE IN THERE. WORTH IT FOR THAT ALONE BUT YOU ALSO GET A
SUPERBLY ODDBALL TRACK ON THE FLIP. HALF JAZZ, HALF BEATS... A
GREAT MIXTURE. RECOMMENDED.
New Releases (Vinyl): Hip Hop
AZ - THE COME UP - FAST LIFE - 12" (FSLS154)
The best track from the lp here for me. Primo on the boards and
AZ on form, what more could you ask for?
DJ MOVES - A SAD STATE OF AFFAIRS - BULLY - 7" (FU18)
The Bully 7"s are a bit costly, but collectable, always go, and
are always quality items. There's lots of potty mouth at the =
beginning
of the A-side, but once that's out of the way with, we move into
traditional Sixtoo / lo-fi leftfield Hip Hop territory. The flip
is the better track for my money, being more laid-back, introverted,
eerie and musical - very strong indeed.=20
JURASSIC 5 - RED HOT - UP ABOVE - 12" (UA3088)
The J5 rock over a phat as you like rhythm from the daptones on
this great single. What with the recent breakestra single on =
Ubiquity,
the 5 must be feelin riding those live rhythms at the moment.
recommended.........
NAS - MY WILL - WORD OF MOUTH - 12" (WOM021)
July Black and nas get all sweet and sugary on this tune that
is not coming out for a bit. the a side is the best though, nice
rhymes. Have a listen......
PRODIGY (MOBB DEEP) - STUCK ON YOU - WORD OF MOUTH - 12" (WOM016)
Superb! 2 great cuts here, the a side is a great club cut with
speeded up soul vocals. The flip is a tense dark number that has
a clean & a dirty version. top stuff!!!
QNC - HYPE, FRESH, LIVE - GRAND CENTRAL - 12" (GC194)
Not to be confused with an embarrassingly poor shopping channel,
QNC return on Grand Central with this surprisingly decent tune
with a neat old school analogue meets new school digital production.
Good, choppy drums make this stand out from the crowd.=20
VORDUL MEGA - BELIEVE - NATURE SOUNDS - 12" (NSD16)
Taken from the lp The revelation of young havoks comes this single
that features jean grae (What What to some of us). On the flip
is a previous unreleased track stay up. check...

New Releases (Vinyl): Guitar Based
BAIKONOUR - FOR THE LONELY HEARTS OF THE COSMOS - MELODIC - LP =
(MELO031LP)
Best Melodic album since Lucky Pierre, without a shadow of a doubt.
Bit of a welcome departure, too - this is more Krautrock / =
psychedelia
/ post rock inspired than anything else and works like a dream.
Think Neu / Stereolab meets Kreidler meets Do Make Say Think and
some of the Constellation crowd - yes, it's that good. Hints of
Can, too. You'll have to try hard not to be impressed by this.
BELLINI - SMALL STONES - TEMPORARY RESIDENCE - LP (TRR87LP)
A bit more art-rocky than i expected from this label best known
for droney spacerock / post rock. Think a more artsy Fugazi fronted
by Patti Smith... apparently this band contains members of Uzeda
and Girls Against Boys, which makes sense. A record that could
have been made at any time in the last 20 years but that's kind
of its appeal, i suppose. Have a listen.
BLOOD ON THE WALL - AWESOMER - THE SOCIAL REGISTRY - LP (TSR020LP)
The Social Registry are carving out quite the niche for themselves
when it comes to American indie art rock. This lot remind me a
little of Unrest and/or Superchunk, ie. kinda post-punky, kinda
lo-fi, pretty rockin', a bit all over the place but proud to be
so. Nice.
COMANECHI - NAKED - WHITE HEAT - 7" (OPE004)
There's a bit of a buzz surrounding this girl-boy two-piece, and
to be fair this isn't bad. If i had to draw a pie-chart, i'd say
this was 50% Huggy Bear, 30% Bis, 10% Kenickie and 10% Tiger,
which is probably showing my age a bit too much for comfort. =
Butt-kickin',
butt-shakin' rawk and/or roll.=20
FALL, THE - HEX ENDUCTION HOUR - EARMARK - 2xLP (4004LP)
Expanded edition of the Fall's groundbreaking 'Hex Enduction Hour'.
This classic lp is often seen as the band at their most brilliant.
With Mark E. Smith at his vitriol spitting best, twin drums backing
up twin guitars and an undercurrent of twisted pop sensibilities
to boot, this gnarling wreckage of sound put the band firmly on
every map on the planet. A must for fans & novices alike, this
version includes an entire album of bonus tracks. Superb!!!
FALL, THE - ROOM TO LIVE - EARMARK - 2xLP (40041LP)
A long awaited re-issue, 'Room To Live' was originally released
only two months after the classic 'Hex..' lp. Acting as a 'fake
left' just as success seemed apparent, this lp second guessed
both critics and fans alike. Includes the classic 'Papal Visit'
and the title track 'Room To Live'. This edition also includes
an additional lp of rare and unreleased recordings. A must..........
FALL, THE - LIVE IN LONDON 1980 - EARMARK - LP (EM307LP)
Released in 1982 as as a ltd edition of 4000 copies, this impossible
to find and near legendary live show is now available again thanks
to Earmark. Capturing the raw energy and unpolished charm of the
band in it's post-Grotesque, pre-Hex state, this previously =
impossible-to-find
live recording has been remastered to give us a stunning document
of a young Fall with the best possible sound. Inc 'Middle Mass',
'Pay Your Rates', 'An Older Lover', 'English Scheme' & more.
FIFTY FOOT HOSE - CAULDRON - N/A - LP (SDLP289)
Seriously trippy lp with the much comped cut "Rose". a headnodding,
psyched out affair with lots of analog synthy wibbles adding to
the potent mix. a must have in my book.....
FRANZ FERDINAND - DO YOU WANT TO - DOMINO - 7" (RUG211)
Personally, i think this is a pretty disappointing new single
from Franz Ferdinand - i was kinda hoping they'd do something
a bit more interesting now and not just a generic rehash of what
they've done before. The tune and lyrics are very weak to these
ears. Mind you, i dare say this is exactly what most of their
fans want and the new album will be even more successful than
their debut. There really is better out there, though....
JULLANDER - PHOBOS IN FUNKYTOWN - SUNDAY SERVICE - LP (SUN08LP)
There's been a tendency for people to overlook this label, but
let's hope this is the release that changes all that. Mellow,
jazzy post rock with occasional, unobtrusive vocals remind one
of the very early Kitty Yo gear (when they were a very different
label), eg. Couch, To Rococo Rot etc. The likes of Hood, Billy
Mahonie etc are valid comparisons also, likewise Blumfeld. Well
worth a listen.
LES INCOMPETENTS - REUNION / MUCH TOO MUCH - WHITE HEAT - 7" (OPE003)
Hmmmm, this one's bordering a bit too much on Ska-punk for my
liking (y'know, that kinda shouty half-spoken vocal you get that
really grates at 10am when you've got a slight hangover?). "Deep
In Session", who did that? If only Steve Lamacq was here, he'd
tell me, probably buy this and give it lots of airtime - ten years
ago. Some nice geese on the cover, though.
LUPEN CROOK - PETALS FRESH FROM ROAD KILL - TAP 'N' TIN - 7" (TAP004)
Poor Lupen Crook. Being "Tipped in the NME Yearbook as 'One To
Watch' for 2005" usually spells instant death (anyone for Terris?),
especially considering the credibility of that publication these
days. What does it sound like? Well, this is acoustic =
singer/songwriter
stuff, a bit like Sondre Lerche meets Hefner but this isn't as
good at that sounds, nor is this chap as clever as he thinks he
is. Ok, but nothing more.
MARS - COMPLETE STUDIO RECORDINGS 1977-1978 - IMPORTANT - LP =
(IMPREC047LP)
Mars were the first, & most influential of NYC's No Wave groups.
This hand numbered, beautifully packaged vinyl edition is limited
to 1000 only. Being a 'complete' edition, it also includes the
four, very rare Brian Eno produced tracks. This lp is 32 minutes
of raw power & dislocated lyrical frenzy that today stand out
as the finest examples of New York's No Wave movement. =
Stunning......
MILKSHAKES, THE - NOTHING CAN STOP THESE MEN - DAMAGED GOODS - LP =
(DAMGOOD250LP)
Following on from the tremendous '..In Germany' lp, this album,
recorded in 1985, has a more varied playlist and more solid =
production.
Although still a rock'n'roll sound, the Shake's are pushing their
envelope to the max. Anyone who is a fan of Billy Childish's work
simply must check out this four piece, one of his earlier projects.
MILKSHAKES, THE - THE MILKSHAKES IN GERMANY - DAMAGED GOODS - LP =
(DAMGOOD249LP)
Damn good beat down garage punk in a rock'n'roll tradition from
Billy Childish and friends. Recorded in Germany back in 1983,
this lp is as solid as they come. My personal favourites are 'She's
The Kind Of Girl' and the wonderful ' Sometimes I Wantcha (for
your money)'. Fabulous four piece rock biznuss from around our
way.......
SUNBURNED HAND OF THE MAN - COMPLEXION - RECORDS - LP (R13LP)
Although still drone-like as in the previous releases, 'Complexion'
seems less structured and more free form. At times both warm &
unnerving, this two track, two sided long player is a wonderful
compiment and a clear progression from previous releases. Gorgeous
cover art too.........
VARIOUS PRODUCTION - HATER - VARIOUS - 7" (VARS007)
Back in stock after a prolonged absence. This is an odd one, to
put it mildly. The A-side is a bit like early Beth Orton, only
a lot more electronic (bordering on grime, in fact... now there's
a hybrid), whereas the B-side is something completely different
- a real traditional / Steeleye Span-style folk number. Worth
hearing, i'd say!=20
VASHTI BUNYAN - JUST ANOTHER DIAMOND DAY - DICRISTINA - LP + 7" =
(STEP04)
It's nice to be able to write that this is no longer Vashti's
only album, with the follow-up to this 1970 LP finally just around
the corner! This pretty much became the Holy Grail of British
Folk a few years ago before finally being reissued. Featuring
contributions from members of Fairport Convention and the Incredible
String Band, as well as string arrangements by Robert Kirby (who
worked with Nick Drake) and production by Joe Boyd (ditto), this
cast iron classic album has seen Vashti credited by the likes
of Devendra Banhart and Joanna Newsom as a major source of =
inspiration.
Not as reclusive as she once was, that elusive new album is merely
weeks away but in the meantime, treat yourself with this lovely
American vinyl repress!
ZEPHYRS, THE - BRIGHT YELLOW FLOWERS ON A DARK DOUBLE BED - NOIS - CD =
(NOIS)
Dreamy, country, folky and very very pleasant. A full band at
times and just guitar and vocals at others. Reminds me of Califone,
Mike Fellows or even Godspeed You! or Silver Mt. Zion. With an
untitled bonus track and not a foot wrong on any of the 10 titled
tracks I can safely say this is a winner. Check !!!!
Restocks (Vinyl): Guitar Based

18 HOME RECORDINGS FROM THIS ENIGMA. RECORDED IN 1966 - 67 AND
CONSISTING OF COVERS, TRADITIONAL FOLK SONGS AS WELL AS SOME OF
NICKS OWN COMPOSITIONS. BEAUTIFUL......
New Releases (Vinyl): Funk / Jazz / Soul
BROCKINGTONS, THE - S/T - TODAY - LP (TODAY1003)
An lp of many influyences here. A lovely mix of folk, soul, and
a hint of psyche in places (mainly due to the fine organ work).
some great songs on here as well as some shifting compositions.
a rewarding listen , give it a spin.....
CURTIS MAYFIELD - CURTIS - CURTOM - LP (CUR8005)
Great debut from Curtis here which i think was the first release
on his own curtom label. Many great tracks with the exceptional
"Move on up" being perhaps the most well know. Recommended.....
DAVID AXELROD - THE EDGE : CAPITOL 1966 - 70 - CAPITOL - 2xLP =
(3116171LP)
Superb collection of some of davids gratest moments. the edge,
the warnings, songs of innocence, Don Randi's theme from the fox
aand more. all culled from his capitol years. Essential.....
GARY BARTZ / DONALD BYRD - FUNKED UP / THINK TWICE - MIZELL 2005 MIX - =
BLUE NOTE - 12" (BTE34322)
2 tracks from the mizell comp here. one is a reworking of think
twice, and on the flip is gary bartz funked up. i think this is
somewhat limited this 12", you have been warned......
LITTLE BARRIE - GREENER PASTURES - GENUINE ARTICLE - 7" (GEN039S)
Never been too sure about Little Barrie - it's all a bit too session
musician funk jam for me - but the DJ Nu-Mark remix certainly
shakes things up a little with some seriously fat old drums =
a-happening.
See what you think.=20
LOWRELL - S/T - AVI - LP (6070)
Stonking soul disco lp with the huge "Mellow mellow right on"
as well as a nice beat on one of the tracks on the flip. Wonderful
lp that really needed a reissue, check it out.....
US 69 - YESTERDAYS FOLKS - BUDDAH RECORDS - LP (BUD5035)
Hippy dippy trippy psycey folk that works best on the cut "2069:
a space oddity" one of those lp's that takes its influence from
so many genres, recommended...
VARIOUS - MIZELL - BLUE NOTE - LP (3343091LP)
This production duo were turned around the bluenote catalouge
and dragged it into the 70's giving it a much more contemporary
sound. As soon as you here it you'll know it. they created that
funky fusion sound for artists such as donald byrd, bobbi humphrey
& gary bartz. Every track here is a classic. An essential document
to a sound that influenced house & hip hop to a deegree. =
recommended....
Restocks (Vinyl): Funk / Jazz / Soul
GREGORY JAMES EDITION - PROPHETS OF SOUL - DAKAR - LP (76908)
WONDERFULLY ATMOSPHERIC LP BY THIS TRIO. THEIR VERSION OF AIN'T
NO SUNSHINE IS PRETTY AMAZING (KRS THOUGHT SO, HE USED IT TO GOOD
EFFECT ON...... ER....... EMM.... WELL, ON ONE OF HIS TRACKS!)
THE KEYBOARD SOUNDS ARE AWESOME! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED......
MARTA ACUNA - DANCE DANCE DANCE - P & P - 12" (12666)
another fine repress from the extensive P&P catalog gets a welcome
reissue. uplifting inspiring disco with just the right amount
of brie to keep it from being to cheesey.comes in the shape of
2 versions, a disco & a dj. the kind of headnodding disco sound
that has helped shape the sound of some of the b etter house =
producers
of today. you know who i mean dont you......
New Releases (Vinyl): Reggae / Dub
AFRICAN BROTHERS & KING TUBBY - AFRICAN BROTHERS MEET KING TUBBY IN =
DUB - NATURE SOUNDS - LP (NSD116LP)
A superb selection of lost dub mixes here by king Tubby. Although
the sound is a bit scratchy in places (and all the better for
it in my book!) this is a pretty stunning selection of dubs, props
to the boys at Nature Sound....
New Releases (CD): Electronica
AABZU / PHYLR - THE SHAPE OF LOST THINGS - SIMPLE LOGIC - CD (SIM1CD)
A mix of electronics, some live instrumentation, and a lot of
atmospherics from Poland. Kind of like Spekk, Plop etc. Well worth
checking....
BLACK DICE - BROKEN EAR RECORD - DFA - CD (DFAEMI2148CD)
BOATS, THE - WE MADE IT FOR YOU - MOTEER - CD (MOTEER::005CD)
Second charming release from The Boats on Moteer. I am going to
quote... "We made it for you out of love on a saved orphaned piano,
it's rusty, out of tune strings, beaten by dust covered hammers
on an unstable creaking floor. The vibrations of it's soul captured
one last time." Combine that lovely sentiment with the fact that
all the track names are people - the people it was made for.=20
OK and now for the music - fragile, delicate and intimate acoustic
and electronic music that gets a big recommendation.
BROADCAST - TENDER BUTTONS - WARP - CD (WARPCD136)
Broadcast have consistently produced excellent albums over the
years, and despite trimming down to a two-piece are sounding as
strong as ever. There's a slightly more stripped-down feel to
this new material, giving it a slightly Velvet Underground feel
to these ears but it's the songs that stand out, and this album
has plenty of those. Extremely highly recommended, buy with utter
confidence.
CAPITOL K - NOMAD JUNK - FAITH AND INDUSTRY - CD (FAI005)
Thankfully, this is a real return to form for Kristian Robinson
and probably his best release since his debut on Planet Mu. Diverse,
eclectic (schizophrenic, almost), stuffed to the gills with ideas
and invention, this is energised electronic pop for the 21st century
and beyond. Check it out, it may surprise you. =20
CHESSMACHINE - LIVE IN LOS ANGELES - L-NE - CD (LINE_023)
Chessmachine is a collaborative project featuring Line main man
and sonic experimentalist par exceellence Richard Chartier, with
Russian artists Ivan Pavlov (aka Coh of Raster Noton fame). Recorded
in February 2005 it's a challenging head-to-head mirroring, =
sonically
at least, the early years of the Cold War. East and West, PC and
MAC... a real battle, and one that's incredibly intriguing from
beginning to end. Both artists affect the others work and it's
a constantly evolving and shifting piece that ranges from dry
drone-forms through to rythmic, click-based, bass-heavy moments.
On the way though you get moments of harsh white noise, absolutely
reduced minimalism and plenty of static sounds. Not nearly as
heavy-going as I expected it to be, this is an immensely satisfying
CD all round. As ever with Line, this comes highly recommended
for fans of the more abstract end of contemporary digital =
minimalism.
CLUE TO KALO - ONE WAY, IT'S EVERY WAY - LEAF - CD (BAY45CD)
Licenced from Mush Records in the US, this new Clue To Kalo album
sees the band heading down a more song-based path. Actually, this
isn't a million miles away from Caribou Formerly Manitoba, albeit
more folktronica-y (see also Iron and Wine and The Postal Service).
Wouldn't have sounded out of place on Melodic a few years ago,
this, either (which is meant as a compliment). =
Psyche-folky-indie-tronica
from the Static Caravan (also) school of thought. Leaf is still
ten, by the way.
FUNCKARMA - REFURBISHED ONE - N5MD - CD (CATMD130)
A superb collection of remixes by the Funckarma brothers. Absolute
electronic bliss from beginning to end which features versions
of tracks by Plaid, Blamstrain, Mr Projectile, Funkstorung, =
Xenoxeno,
Speedy J, Heavenly Social and loads more. Crunched out beats,
dark melodies... everything you'd expect from these top producers.
Highly recommended.=20
HAUSCHKA - THE PREPARED PIANO - KARAOKE KALK - CD (KALKCD31)
Lovely piano music from Hauschka - stuffed to the gills with =
feeling,
this is the sort of music that gets used to great effect in films
- moments of quiet reflection (often when it is raining or has
just stopped raining). It is so simple, but so effective. Really
beautiful music. Recommended - one of Karaoke Kalk's best for
some time.
JACKSON & HIS COMPUTER BAND - SMASH - WARP - CD (WARPCD137)
An apt title, as not only should this be a smash hit but it does
rather smash genres together... imagine Daft Punk meets Vitalic
meets the cutting-up skills and beat-driven brutality of Aphex
in a bad mood and you're getting there. In theory, this stuff
should be a b*tch to dance to, but just you try keeping still
- it's an absolute beast. It takes some getting used to, but trust
me, this is one of the good time party records of the year. Wicked.
MARC HELLNER - MARRIAGES - PEACEFROG - CD (PFG068CD)
How interesting that the CD of this has a rather different, =
Turner-influenced
artwork! A few weeks ago, we reviewed a mini-album by Marc Hellner
and this full-lengther complements that perfectly. Co-produced
by Telefon Tel Aviv, this is a lush slice of semi-shoegazing =
electronic
pop that has a definite Ulrich Schnauss and/or Khonnor feel about
it, not to mention some of the Resonant artists (to these ears,
for example Blindfold or Port Royal). Seriously mellow, definitely
recommended.
MIKE BOO - DUNHILL DRONE COMMITTEE - ALPHA PUP - CD (APR-010)
Don't know who Mike Boo is, but from the outset this sounded really
promising. It's a strange combination of atmospheric soundscape
/ film soundtrack sounding pieces that come from the darker side
of music; and jazz based meanderings that would be ideal as a
musical backdrop to a grubby basement bar. If it doesn't appeal
at first, persevere, because as a whole album this really does
hit the spot. =20
PIANA - EPHEMERAL - HAPPY - CD (HAP003)
Happy is a label that pretty much lives up to its name! As part
of the 12k empire (although not actually run by Taylor Deupree)
you can imagine that there's a degree of quality to it, both =
musically
and artistically that's certainly enviable. Piana are a four-piece
act using cello, violin, guitar, piano and organ , along with
a certain amount of electronic manipulation and processing to
conjure up a mellow, laid-back and infinitely pleasing style that;s
warm, friendly and very endearing. Similar at times to the work
that Taylor did with Eisi or some of the Plop and Noble material.
It's light and airy and very jolly and comes completely recommended.
Very nice indeed.
SIXTOO - DURATION - DVD - 1200 HOBOS - CD (FUCD004)
Another repress of sixtoo's most sought after work here. This
time it comes with a DVD? Couldnt tell you whats on it as we dont
have a player here! Still, i 'm sure the fans will know what it's
about!!=20
STEVE RODEN - AIRFORMS - L-NE - CD (LINE_022)
Line introduce a new line (Ho-Ho) in packaging here with picture
sleeves and colour coding... looks really nice, actually, after
my intial reservations. Musically, Steve Roden once again provides
a tour-de-force with this wonderful installation piece. The wrok
was inspired by a group of houses designed by Wallace Neff in
the 1940's using a process he called 'Airform Construction'. The
buildings were created using a technique of spraying concrete
over small balloons and the musical aspects conceived from this
are a sonic reflection of the idea of living in an organically
formed space. Intriguing, certainly, and as it turns out, one
of Rodens most engaging pieces to date. It ebbs and flows using
a superbly melodic drone sound that builds and grows over the
course of the CD gradually adding twinkling sound in the background
and extra layers of texture. it's dramatic, but amazingly soothing
at the same time and really comes into its own on a good pair
of headphones. Sublimely produced and beautifully realised. In
essence, highly recommended.
TIM 'LOVE' LEE - AGAINST NATURE - TUMMY TOUCH - CD (TUCH114CD)
Tim 'Love' Lee is often an artist to be discovered with his tongue
firmly planted in his cheek but this is a bizarre one even by
his standards. Tim has subtitled "Against Nature" by describing
it as "Electronic tone-scapes featuring members of The New York
Aquarian Men's Drum Workshop", and it's certainly one of his more
experimental works, perhaps a bit like letting Matthew Herbert
loose on a roomful of Moogs and then getting Fennesz to remix
it! A real curio and one you'll really have to listen to to =
understand
properly.
VARIOUS - AURORA 2 - MERCK - CD (MERCK036CD)
Round two in Merck's 'Aurora' compilation series. A wonderful
selection of material (some previously unreleased) from the likes
of Deru, Kettel, Shapeshifter, Twerk, Max Spransy and many more.
A comforting example of lush electronica, soundscapes and textural
pieces to sit somewhere just out of reach of your consciousness.
Pretentious? Me?
VENETIAN SNARES - MEATHOLE - PLANET MU - CD (ZIQ099CD)
Oooh, heck, it's the Snares! I have to say i do prefer Venetian
Snares when he's on Planet Mu - generally speaking his material
is a little more varied and interesting when he's on Mr Paradinas's
label. Yes, this is pretty brutal (obviously), with lots of frantic,
amphetamine-fuelled drill 'n' bass beats, sci-fi effects and =
distortion
a-plenty, but with more of a Squarepusher / Aphex feel than his
Peaceoff releases (for example). Wow, wot a rush, etc!
VILLAGE ORCHESTRA, THE - ET IN ARCADIA EGO - HIGHPOINT LOWLIFE - CD =
(HPLL014CD)
Fair play to Highpoint Lowlife, they really are consistently coming
up with supreme releases. The Village Orchestra (an offshoot of
Marcia Blaine School for Girls) seems very influenced by Brian
Eno, but then who isn't these days? The approach to ambient textures
and the more gently beat-driven tracks sounds very much in his
latter-day style, with maybe hints of Murcof and Shuttle 358.
A very impressive album all round, highly recommended.
XILLON - PREQUIEM - COMPONENT - CD (COM118CD)
Beaty electronica that will sit perfectly with your chocalate
industries, merck collection. some tricky rough rhythms strongly
underpin some spacious strings and pure electronica squibbles
and squelchies. have a listen.....
XYN - OUTPUTSQUARE - COMPONENT - CD (COM119CD)
Soft layered atmospheres lay behind some beautiful warm sounds
on this CD which seems to bond newer electronica laptop boffin
muzak with older plaidesque dont get out much music. sorry about
that, i came over all cynical for a second there, must be the
weather. on a serious note if you are into merck, plaid et al,
you's a gonna love this. recommended...
Restocks (CD): Electronica
ALVA NOTO + RYUICHI SAKAMOTO - INSEN - RASTER NOTON - CD (R-N065)
Back in stock! Sometimes, something comes along that transcends
the boundaries of musical genre and confounds your ideas of who
should be listening to what. "Vrioon" by Alva Noto (aka Carsten
Nicolai) and Ryuichi Sakamoto was one such release. it's unique
blend of Carsten's micro electronic processing and ryuichi's =
delicious
piano playing ensured that a whole host people enjoyed its dulcet
tones. This follow-up is simply, more of the same. Anyone who
bemoans that fact though is missing the point by a large margin,
as this stands equally tall as the first album. if anyything,
this is actually a more melodic piece of work and doesn't rely
so heavily on the repetitive piano motifs of "Vrioon". There is
a more tangiable feeling of tunefeulness here and it absolutely,
100% suits the ultra-refined and stripped down tones and textures
that lie underneath. Quite frankly everyone should own a copy
of this staggeringly beautiful piece of work. possibly one of
the most essential releases of the year. (I think he likes it!!
- ed)
ALVA NOTO + RYUICHI SAKAMOTO - VRIOON - RASTER NOTON - CD (R-N050)
50th release for Raster Noton sees the pairing of these two talented
artists in what has become something of a watershed recording.
At heart it's a gentle, intricate and subtle blend of electronics
and acoustic piano that weaves and hypnotizes with Sakamoto =
providing
the piano phrases and Carsten Nicolai gently processing and =
manipulating
them underneath. The use of identifiable motifs works like a dream
and really gives the listener something to lock onto (as if you
needed to). Beautifully melancholy and aching with divine melodies,
this release is infinitely special and if you own the second =
collaboration
'Insen' you should treat this as a must have CD. Simply awesome.
POLMO POLPO / ARTHUR RUSSELL - KISS ME AGAIN AND AGAIN - INTR_VERSION =
- CD (INEP002)
LOVELY LITTLE ODDITY THIS WHICH COMES ON A 3" CD PRESSED ONTO
A CLEAR 5" CD (IF YOU SEE WHAT I MEAN!). POLMO POLPO GETS HIS
HANDS ON THIS CLASSIC OLD ARTHUR RUSSELL TRACK AND DELIVERS A
HYPNOTIC 21 MINUTE VERSION COMPLETE WITH SOUNDSCAPE MOMENTS COUPLED
WITH DELICIOUSLY FUNKY BEATS. DISCO, DONE THE TEXTURAL WAY! A
NOVEL APPROACH AND ONE THAT WORKS A TREAT. DON'T HANG ABOUT AS
THIS IS VERY LIMITED INDEED!
New Releases (CD): Techno / Electro
DJ KOZE - KOSI COMES AROUND - KOMPAKT - CD (KOMCD43)
DJ Koze is a superb techno artist and this highly anticipated
album sees him at the peak of his powers. To just dismiss this
as another minimal techno record would be wrong - his crisp, deep
production style coupled with a penchant for wicked grooves makes
him stand out from the ever-swelling crowd. Add to that a real
musicality, playfulness and lightness of touch all too often missing
from the genre and you can't ask for more. The perfect blend of
techno and electronica, this comes highly, highly recommended.
MR. OIZO - MOUSTACHE (HALF A SCISSOR) - F COMMUNICATIONS - CD (F230CD)
Anyone that heard last year's "Stunt" single (included on here)
won't be too surprised to hear this is a shocking good piece of
work from Quentin Dupieux. If you're into Vitalic, Jackson & His
Computer Band, Daft Punk etc stop what you're doing right now
and check this out - pound for pound this is a better album than
any of those. Cut up but still incredibly tight and funky, this
has the power to devastate dancefloors with its deep futuristic
electro sound. Totally ace stuff - you need!
ROB DA BANK - FABRIC 24 - FABRIC - CD (FABRIC47)
I'm as suspicious of Rob Da Bank as anyone, but fair play, this
is a pretty good mix and quite Smallfish friendly, actually. Michael
Mayer, Nathan Fake, Triola (Wighnomy Bros remix), Plastikman,
Whitey, The Fiery Furnaces, Gabriel Ananda, Vitalic, Mr. Fingers
and Frankie Knuckles all make appearances, and although one or
two of the track selections are a little predictable, the overall
album is pretty hard to argue with. Nice.
New Releases (CD): House
VARIOUS - A CLASSIC DECADE - CLASSIC - CD (CMCCD111)
Ten years on, and Classic are a highly respected house label,
and this double CD (mixed by Luke Solomon and Derrick "L." Carter)
is a solid reminder as to why. Losoul, Greens Keepers, Isolee,
Metro Area, Gemini (Nil points!), Markus Nikolai, Roy Davis Jr,
Roy Davis Sr (not really), Herbert, Blaze and numerous others
all get down and get with it.
New Releases (CD): Hip Hop
NICKY SPESH - THE WORLD I KNOW - BARRY'S BOOTLEGS - CD (SP002)
The men responsible for DJ Rubbish and Cassetteboy bring you this
latest discovery in British Hip Hop. Tongues are firmly planted
in cheeks here (i mean, just look at the cover!). Very nearly
released on Big Dada, according to the press blurb (True or false?
You decide!). Nice and cheap (in every sense!).
New Releases (CD): Guitar Based
A CERTAIN RATIO - LIVE IN GRONINGEN 26.10.1980 - LTM - CD (LTMCD2443)
A complete live show by ACR, recorded by Martin Hannett and Jon
Hurst. This digital remaster includes two bonus tracks, again
dating from 1980, taken from rare singles and compilation albums.
BAIKONOUR - FOR THE LONELY HEARTS OF THE COSMOS - MELODIC - CD =
(MELO031CD)
Best Melodic album since Lucky Pierre, without a shadow of a doubt.
Bit of a welcome departure, too - this is more Krautrock / =
psychedelia
/ post rock inspired than anything else and works like a dream.
Think Neu / Stereolab meets Kreidler meets Do Make Say Think and
some of the Constellation crowd - yes, it's that good. Hints of
Can, too. You'll have to try hard not to be impressed by this.
BELLINI - SMALL STONES - TEMPORARY RESIDENCE - CD (TRR87CD)
A bit more art-rocky than i expected from this label best known
for droney spacerock / post rock. Think a more artsy Fugazi fronted
by Patti Smith... apparently this band contains members of Uzeda
and Girls Against Boys, which makes sense. A record that could
have been made at any time in the last 20 years but that's kind
of its appeal, i suppose. Have a listen.
BLOOD ON THE WALL - AWESOMER - THE SOCIAL REGISTRY - CD (TSR020CD)
The Social Registry are carving out quite the niche for themselves
when it comes to American indie art rock. This lot remind me a
little of Unrest and/or Superchunk, ie. kinda post-punky, kinda
lo-fi, pretty rockin', a bit all over the place but proud to be
so. Nice.
DEVENDRA BANHART - CRIPPLE CROW - XL - CD (XLCD192)
Ever prolific, Devendra releases another two albums worth of =
material
only on the one disc this year! This is more of a full-band effort,
bringing together 22 wonderfully laid-back, hazy, mellow songs
in his ever personable, unique style. Fans of his previous works
will love this, and the slightly more accessible feel of this
LP will no doubt attract many a new devotee as well. The songs
in Spanish are a particular joy. Another wonderful release from
this huge talent.
JULLANDER - PHOBOS IN FUNKYTOWN - SUNDAY SERVICE - CD (SUN08CD)
There's been a tendency for people to overlook this label, but
let's hope this is the release that changes all that. Mellow,
jazzy post rock with occasional, unobtrusive vocals remind one
of the very early Kitty Yo gear (when they were a very different
label), eg. Couch, To Rococo Rot etc. The likes of Hood, Billy
Mahonie etc are valid comparisons also, likewise Blumfeld. Well
worth a listen.
NINA WALSH - MEMO'S - C-PIJ - CD (CPIJ05)
Nice CD from this member of Add N to X here. A wonderful mix of
Folk, songs & electronics creating a haunting darkish atmosphere
is not a million miles from some of the add N to x output. Some
nice instrumentation here well worth a listen...... p.s. Apparently
she is not in Add N to X. i have been racking my brains trying
to remember who told me she was, but i just cant. she may have
owned one of thier records though, you never know.........unless
you do..........
ORCHIDS, THE - LYCEUM + SINGLES - LTM - CD (LTMCD2442)
Great to see some more Sarah stuff getting freed from the vaults
after so many years - long may it continue (Blueboy next, please!).
Here's The Orchids first album (originally released on Sarah in
1989), remastered and extended with 12 bonus tracks from Sarah
and Caff singles. The CD booklet contains detailed artist biography,
photographs and recording information - everything you'd rightly
expect. Still sounds great, too. An absolute must for fans of
twee indie pop everywhere.
VARIOUS / SUPER NUMERI - THE ENOCHIAN WAY - COUNTER - CD (20507136)
Ninja Tune's Super Numeri has compiled a most excellent "sound
collage" here (his wording!) of off-the-wall, experimental pop
mainly from decades gone by. With tracks from the Silver Apples,
Yoko Ono, Brigitte Bardot, Little Richard, Fairport Convention,
The Velvet Underground, The Beach Boys, Shocking Blue, John Lee
Hooker and others (and additional snippets from everyone from
The Beatles to Ornette Coleman to Robin Gibb to Joe Meek to Sun
Ra!), this has got to be worth checking! Seems like some Japan
only import... more please!
New Releases (CD): Funk / Jazz / Soul
MISHA MENGELBERG - SENNE SING SONG - TZADIK - CD (TZA7613)
A nice cd of jazz from the dutch pianist Mengelberg. 9 originals
here written & reciorded to celebrate his 70th birthday. He has
a wonderfully quirky style that sits well in the trio setting....
VARIOUS - MIZELL - BLUE NOTE - CD (11615CD)
This production duo were turned around the bluenote catalouge
and dragged it into the 70's giving it a much more contemporary
sound. As soon as you here it you'll know it. they created that
funky fusion sound for artists such as donald byrd, bobbi humphrey
& gary bartz. Every track here is a classic. An essential document
to a sound that influenced house & hip hop to a deegree. =
recommended....
Restocks (CD): Funk / Jazz / Soul
DAVID AXELROD - THE EDGE : CAPITOL 1966 - 70 - CAPITOL - CD =
(3116182CD)
Superb collection of some of davids gratest moments. the edge,
the warnings, songs of innocence, Don Randi's theme from the fox
aand more. all culled from his capitol years. Essential.....
WANDA ROBINSON - ME & A FRIEND - BREATHLESS - CD (52018CD)
Wonderful cd of concious, soulful poetry with background music
supplied by julius brockington and his band. Funky, jazzy and
thought provoking, what more could you ask for!
New Releases (CD): Reggae / Dub
AFRICAN BROTHERS & KING TUBBY - AFRICAN BROTHERS MEET KING TUBBY IN =
DUB - NATURE SOUNDS - CD (NSD116CD)
A superb selection of lost dub mixes here by king Tubby. Although
the sound is a bit scratchy in places (and all the better for
it in my book!) this is a pretty stunning selection of dubs, props
to the boys at Nature Sound....
New Releases (CD): Experimental
BAR KOKHBA SEXTET - S/T - TZADIK - 3xCD (TZA45011)
6 members of the masada family make up this sextet who recorded
some of John Zorn's compositions on this 3 CD set. This is another
of those CD's containing music recorded around the man's 50th
birthday.....
DEREK BAILEY - CARPAL TUNNEL - TZADIK - CD (TZA7612)
A considerable acheivment this cd. Mr Bailey, who is one of the
most influential experimental free jazz guitarists over the last
30 years, has recorded this despite having a crippling hand =
disorder.
Each track title signifies who many weeks after his accident they
were recorded. Ingenious.
JOHN ZORN - MASADA ROCK - TZADIK - CD (TZA8103)
A mixed bag here jumping from heavy rock to classical to world
beat from this zorn lead trio.=20

<DIV> BLACK DICE - BROKEN EAR RECORD - DFA - LP=20
(DFAEMI2148LP)<BR> Black Dice might technically be on =
a major=20

kind of=20
musical compromise has taken<BR> place. These are =
dense,=20
experimental soundscapes and perhaps as<BR> strange as =
ambient=20

category as=20
Brian Eno defined it). Actually, this could well =
be<BR> their=20

have to listen to to understand<BR> properly.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> VENETIAN SNARES - MEATHOLE - PLANET MU - 2xLP=20
(ZIQ099LP)<BR> Oooh, heck, it's the Snares! I have to =
say i do=20
prefer Venetian<BR> Snares when he's on Planet Mu - =
generally=20
speaking his material<BR> is a little more varied and=20
interesting when he's on Mr Paradinas's<BR> label. =
Yes, this=20
is pretty brutal (obviously), with lots of =
frantic,<BR> =20
amphetamine-fuelled drill 'n' bass beats, sci-fi effects and=20
distortion<BR> a-plenty, but with more of a =
Squarepusher /=20
Aphex feel than his<BR> Peaceoff releases (for =
example). Wow,=20
wot a rush, etc!</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> WARLOCK - FULL TILT - RAG & BONE - 12"=20
(TOTTER10)<BR> Nice! Is this grime or has that =
sub-genre=20
mutated once again?<BR> This has a bit of everything =
on the=20
go. A slightly Aphex-y beat,<BR> ragga-y bass, cow =
bells,=20
slamming percussion, and a suitable high<BR> tempo =
means it=20
should equally get all sorts of crowds moving =
about.<BR> The=20
B-side is more traditional (if that's not a =
contradiction<BR> =20
in terms) grime gear, but seriously good production values=20
and<BR> infectious riffs make mincemeat out of most of =
the=20
competition.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>New Releases (Vinyl): Techno / Electro</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> ALEX UNDER - DISPOSITIVOS DE MI GRANJA - TRAPEZ - 12"=20
(TRAPEZ055)<BR> I think we all probably know by now =
just how=20
good Alex Under is<BR> and this full length album is =
an=20
indespensible release in so many<BR> ways. It's not =
just the=20
stripped down and incredibly funky nature<BR> of the =
Techno=20
that does it... there's an incredibly satisfying<BR> =
range of=20
sounds on here to satisfy even the most jaded =
palette.<BR> 7=20
tracks of pure brilliance that comes highly recommended.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> ALTER EGO - TUBEACTION - KLANG - 12" =
(KLANG95)<BR> =20
The main point of interest here is the Losoul remix of the=20
title<BR> track. He puts together a wickedly strippd =
version=20
that uses crunchy<BR> 8-bit sounding hi hats and =
percussion to=20
convey a minimal, funky<BR> and surprisingly fluid =
flava.=20
Killer groove. The flip has two<BR> ultra rough cuts =
in a=20
typical Alter Ego style. Another goodie<BR> from =
Klang.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> ANDERS ILAR - NIGHTWIDTH - NARITA RECORDS - 12"=20
(NRT06)<BR> With a plethora of highly-applauded =
releases on=20
Audio.NL, Echocord<BR> and Shitkatapult behind him, =
the=20
prospect of Anders Ilar on Narita<BR> was always quite =
a=20
mouthwatering one, but let me tell you my friends,<BR> =
this=20
rocks. The opening track is an absolute killer - a =
phat,<BR> =20
throbbing beat, deep, shuffling effects and wicked sci-fi=20
chords<BR> mean you're gonna be hearing this one for =
months to=20
come! That's<BR> not to say the remain three tracks =
are a=20
disappointment, far from<BR> it. "Rourel" is seriously =
dark=20
and eerie, and just as strong.<BR> The seriously Aphex =
/ early=20
Autechre-esque / Mathew Jonson feel<BR> of "A Day Ago" =
(apt!),=20
and the Kompakt Pop Ambient style of the<BR> closing =
track=20
should see this crossing over, too. An absolutely<BR> =20
exceptional record.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> ANJA SCHNEIDER & SEBO K - SIDE LEAPS - MOBILEE - 12"=20
(MOBILEE003)<BR> A great team-up here which sees =
Mobilee=20
releasing their best EP<BR> to date. Two tracks that =
are=20
minimal, yet full of grooviness and<BR> a with a =
nicely=20
Electro sound to the basslines. Musically it's<BR> =
very=20
twinkly and features some gorgeous chords to give it a=20
smooth<BR> and tuneful feel whilst still keeping it =
very much=20
a dancefloor<BR> piece. Electro-House? I guess so, but =
of the=20
highest order. Check.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> AROY DEE - SHIFTS - M>O>S RECORDINGS - 12"=20
(M>O>S0004)<BR> Possibly the strongest release =
yet on=20
M>O>S Recordings. Aroy Dee<BR> provides a =
sublime groove=20
that's filled to brimming with a lusciousness<BR> that =
will=20
absolutely hypnotize you. A beautiful blend of =
House<BR> and=20
Techno with a nod to the old-school. Vince Watson turns =
in<BR> =20
a trademark mix with clatterin 909 percussion, a heavy, yet=20
mid-paced<BR> beat and a tribal feel coupled wth =
Detroit=20
vibes. A supreme EP<BR> that's as deep as you'd ever =
want it=20
to be. Highly recommeded.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> ATOM TM PRESENTS... - ACID - EVOLUTION 1988 - 2003 VOL. 1 -=20
LOGISTICS - 2xLP (LOG46LP)<BR> Blistering collection =
of Acid=20
tracks spanning the years 1988 to<BR> 2003 all =
compiled up by=20
Atom Heart. Phresh Phantasy, DJ Roxy,<BR> Atom =
himself, XOX=20
Crew, MC Unknown, DJ Marco Favatti, 21 Brothers<BR> =
and Phreak=20
all deliver killer 303 grooves with a range of =
toughness<BR> =20
and rawness. Something to suit everyone really. Just check=20
out<BR> the samples and see how wicked it is. =
Class.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> BASSTARDS, THE - EP - TUNING SPORK FAMILY AFFAIR - 12"=20
(TSFA02)<BR> Tuning Spork Family Affair deliver their =
second=20
release and it's<BR> another doozie. 4 tracks of =
perky, very=20
lively Tech-Funk with<BR> acidic sounds, killer beats =
and a=20
wonky flava that will be very<BR> familiar to fans of =
the=20
other Tuning Spork material. Low-down,<BR> funky music =
with=20
high production values and a real dancefloor<BR> feel. =
Wicked.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> BLACK DICE - SMILING OFF (PROMO DOUBLE PACK: DFA & LUOMO =
MIXES)=20
- DFA - 2x12" (DFAEMIDJ2150)<BR> This set of mixes is =
an=20
absolute triumph. The DFA mix is a storming<BR> funk =
wig-out=20
even by their standards. The drums are so heavy =
that<BR> it=20
borders on Krautrock but fear not, this is 100% =
dancefloor<BR> =20
material. Flip over for a lush minimal house reworking by=20
that<BR> pioneer of the genre, Luomo (aka Vladislav =
Delay) -=20
one of his<BR> best tracks in a few years, this is =
warm,=20
musical, chilled and<BR> very groovy. The second 12" =
is a=20
rather different affair - a mix<BR> by "ZZ Pot" is =
abrasive=20
and experimental, almost a bit Alec Empire-ish,<BR> =
and this=20
is backed by the hypnotic, swirling original - =
hardly<BR> =20
dancefloor compatible but wicked nonetheless. Needless to=20
say,<BR> we don't have many of these promo double =
packs so act=20
swiftly<BR> and all that.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> BOLCHER - ARDEN EP - SUB STATIC - 12" =
(SUS_49)<BR> =20
A surprisingly heavy sounding record from Substatic with a=20
militant,<BR> stomping 4/4 beat that's a bit of a =
rocker.=20
Keeps it all very<BR> Sub Static, but with an almost=20
progressive feel to the way it<BR> subtly builds up =
over time.=20
Splendid stuff from a very reliable<BR> label.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> CHRIS CARRIER & DJ WILD - ACID ENEMA - CATWASH - 12"=20
(CATWASH002)<BR> What an extremely busy man Chris =
Carrier is.=20
Here he teams up<BR> with DJ Wild for some acidic =
House /=20
Techno fun and games. Coupled<BR> with a nicely tribal =
feel=20
and some great techy sounds this is<BR> both useable =
and=20
engaging. Hypnotic gear from this tip top =
producer.<BR> =20
Check.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> CHRISTOPHER + RAPHAEL JUST - DISCO 128 - COMBINATION - 12"=20
(CORE033)<BR> Retro, fun, bouncy, lively sounds from =
this two=20
man team-up. Chris<BR> and Raphael get it going with a =
nicely=20
progressive build-up and<BR> a selection of authentic =
sounding=20
old-school sounds and basslines.<BR> Kicking beats top =
it off.=20
Electro-Disco of the very best kind.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> CONCRETE SOUL COLLECTIVE - ELECTRONICAL FUNK WITH SOUL - =
DIGITAL=20
SOUL - 12" (DS007)<BR> Two release from the Concrete =
Soul crew=20
in a couple of weeks!<BR> This one sees Simon Hartley =
and=20
Kenny Black once again delivering<BR> some pure Techno =
soul=20
music. Slightly more Electro-based than<BR> the Finest =
Blend=20
EP, but still aching with warmth and depth. =
Stunningly<BR> =20
authentic beats and little moments of melody really capture=20
the<BR> spirit of an age gone by but which, let's face =
it, we=20
all still<BR> love! Killer sounds. Highly =
recommended.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> DAN BERKSON PRESENTS SYNTHO - CONCEPT EP - MOOD MUSIC - 12"=20
(MOODMUSIC035)<BR> This is a really nice two-tracker =
of=20
Electro, House and Techno<BR> all mixed up together to =
provide=20
a very clubby sound throughout.<BR> It's melodic, it's =
old-school and it features some great retro<BR> =
basslines and=20
rock solid beats that'll carry you along in a very<BR> =
hypnotic fashion. Lovely chords and sounds are the icing on=20
the<BR> cake and, although you might find it a bit =
tame at=20
times, it's<BR> really worth checking out.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> DJ YOAV B. - POWERHOUSE EP - WABI SABI - 12"=20
(WABI1002)<BR> Yoav B's own Wabi Sabi label comes good =
with=20
another fabulous<BR> release which blurs the =
boundaries=20
between Tech and House with<BR> a great deal of =
panache. Deep,=20
almost Carl Craig-esque grooves<BR> that roll out =
really=20
rather nicely in a Motor City kind of style.<BR> =
Hypnotic=20
vibes on all 3 tracks with some deliciously put =
together<BR> =20
strings and stabs. Lush, mid-paced and sure to get people=20
wiggling.<BR> Brilliant and essential.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> DK7 - WHERE'S THE FUN? - OUTPUT - 12" =
(OPR81)<BR> =20
Last week we gave you a single-sided promo affair with a=20
Jesper<BR> Dahlback mix, this week here's the original =
plus=20
remixes from<BR> Sten (Dialrec, Sender) and Sweet =
Light (with=20
whom i'm not so familiar).<BR> It's not a bad effort, =
really -=20
the original is a perfectly pleasant<BR> piece of =
mid-tempo=20
electro pop and the Sten remix is as strong<BR> as =
you'd=20
expect, bearing little resemblance to the original. =
The<BR> =20
Sweet Light mix is a pumped-up electro house fest. It's=20
Output,<BR> 'nuff said.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> DUPLEX - FICTIONAL FREQUENCY - FRANTIC FLOWERS - 12"=20
(FS005)<BR> One of those brilliant Clone related =
records on=20
Frantic Flowers<BR> that keeps it absolutey authentic =
and true=20
to the Detroit Techno<BR> sound. Duplex have a long =
history of=20
delivering stunning, upbeat<BR> and beautifully =
layered tracks=20
that will roll on the dancefloor<BR> but have a depth =
and=20
warmth that's incredibly pleasing. Awesome<BR> stuff =
that=20
comes highly recommended. Clear vinyl too!</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> FENIN - BACKBORD EP - ECHOCORD - 12"=20
(ECHOCORD015)<BR> Aah. Echocord. Still doing it after =
15=20
releases. This is another<BR> top offering from Fenin =
and sees=20
him diversifying his sound once<BR> again. The Dub is =
there=20
but there's a wonderfully melodic Electronica<BR> =
style that=20
rears its head. It doesn't always have to be 4/4, =
you<BR> =20
know, and this is absolute proof of that. Funky, deep,=20
ultimately<BR> well produced and an essential for fans =
of the=20
label. Quality.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> FOR DISCO ONLY - 485 U - FOR DISCO ONLY - 12"=20
(FORDISCOONLY2)<BR> Rumour has it this is by =
Villalobos. I'm=20
not sure about that,<BR> but it certainly has a very =
appealing=20
minimalist style coupled<BR> with a very hypnotic =
arrangement.=20
Low-down bass sounds with a<BR> very subby feel plus =
flat,=20
grooving beats and some wicked sound<BR> design make =
this a=20
sure-fire winner for fans of Perlon, Telegraph<BR> =
etc.=20
Absolutely one to check out immediately.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> FRIVOLOUS - XXX EP - PROPTRONIX - 12"=20
(PROPTRONIX12)<BR> Frivolous finds a natural home here =
on=20
Proptronix as he's always<BR> had a slightly obscure =
sound to=20
his tracks. This is taken to its<BR> logical extreme =
here with=20
a four tracker of fun and games. For<BR> the heads, =
there's a=20
straight 4/4 track that is up there with<BR> the best =
of=20
them... stripped, funkygear with a slightly =
oddball<BR> =20
approach. It's from this point on that things get a tad more=20
silly.<BR> Heavy schaffel, amusing vocals, quirky=20
arrangements... it's all<BR> here in abundance. Quite =
mental,=20
but very satisfying indeed.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> GABRIEL ANANDA - TAI NASHA NO KAROSHA REMIXES - KARMAROUGE - =
12"=20
(KR13)<BR> Top selection of remixes taken from =
Gabriel's=20
full-length album.<BR> Includes splendid versions from =
Areal's=20
Metope, Boxer's Frank<BR> Martiniq and even a mix from =
Gabriel=20
himself. Wicked stuff in<BR> a very Cologne style with =
some=20
poppiness, but mostly gnarly, grooving<BR> Tech =
sounds.=20
Check.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> GUI.TAR - CAN"T STOP - CARELESS - 12"=20
(LESS001)<BR> First release from Careless and it's a=20
stripped-back and minimal<BR> slab of really engaging =
Tech=20
fun. Kind of like some of the Villalobos<BR> stuff or =
maybe=20
Luciano with it's low-end beats and basslines.<BR> =
Couple that=20
with some deliciously melodic chords and strings =
and<BR> =20
variety of tightly edited clicks and you've got a winning=20
combination.<BR> Fans of Found Sound, Telegraph etc. =
should=20
investigate this immediately.<BR> Solid.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> HIEM - FRIENDZ / RADIO RADIO - ATLANTIC - 12"=20
(AA003)<BR> Simple 80's concious electro pop here by =
Hiem who=20
seem to ring<BR> a bell with me although we have not =
had=20
anything by them before.<BR> the flip sounds a little =
more=20
like electro boogie electro to me.<BR> Until the vocal =
turn=20
up. People are gonna love this, me not being<BR> one =
of them=20
im afraid. not that its bad, its just not my bag.<BR> =
but what=20
do i know.....</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> HUG - THE ANGRY GHOST - K2 - 12" =
(K2/02)<BR> Hug=20
is none other than John Dahlback in disguise and here he=20
sheds<BR> his more Housey side to create a deep and=20
minimalistic set of<BR> tracks for Kompakt's new K2 =
offshoot.=20
Wicked sound design and<BR> tons of splendid acidic =
noises=20
plus some tough, dancefloor orientated<BR> beats make =
this=20
something of a winner. Recommended.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> JACKSON & HIS COMPUTER BAND - SMASH - WARP - 2xLP=20
(WARPLP137)<BR> An apt title, as not only should this =
be a=20
smash hit but it does<BR> rather smash genres =
together...=20
imagine Daft Punk meets Vitalic<BR> meets the =
cutting-up=20
skills and beat-driven brutality of Aphex<BR> in a bad =
mood=20
and you're getting there. In theory, this stuff<BR> =
should be=20
a b*tch to dance to, but just you try keeping =
still<BR> - it's=20
an absolute beast. It takes some getting used to, but=20
trust<BR> me, this is one of the good time party =
records of=20
the year. Wicked.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> JIRKU / JUDGE - WATCHING YOU - ONI.TOR - 12"=20
(ONI.TOR44)<BR> Very useful four track EP from the =
double team=20
of Jirkku and Judge.<BR> Bumping Techno grooves with a =
suprisingly upbeat feel (considering<BR> Jirku's =
normal=20
dubbier material) with bouncy beats and an =
underground,<BR> =20
choppy feel to the sounds. EAsy to play and great fun to=20
shamble<BR> about to (well, in my case, anyway), this =
is one=20
to check.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> JOHN TEJADA & JUSTIN MAXWELL - INFECTED / 100% =
POST-CONSUMER -=20
PALETTE - 12" (PAL-37)<BR> Rip-roaring new EP from the =
combined talents of label owner and<BR> Techno =
producer=20
extraordinaire, John Tejada, plus his cohort =
Justin<BR> =20
Maxwell. Rolling, technical sounds with some phat and fairly=20
acidic<BR> sounds and basslines. Minimal, but not too =
stripped=20
and full of<BR> quality dancefloor appeal. Pretty much =
up=20
there with 'Paranoid'<BR> in my opinion. Class.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> JUAN MACLEAN, THE - GIVE ME EVERY LITTLE THING - DFA - 7"=20
(DFAEMI72149)<BR> The A-side is typical Juan Maclean =
fare -=20
more eighties than the<BR> eighties decidely lo-fi and =
raw=20
sounding funky, punky dance music;<BR> it will make =
you=20
shuffle about, and that's exactly what it sets<BR> out =
to=20
do. The flip is an-remarkable bit of ambient music -=20
something<BR> that will undoubtedly end up on some =
dreadful=20
chill-out compilation!</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> JUAN MACLEAN, THE - GIVE ME EVERY LITTLE THING - DFA - 12"=20
(DFAEMI2149)<BR> Four mixes of the title track - =
original,=20
Xpress 2, Cajmere and<BR> Putsch 79 mixes. You =
know what=20
you are getting with The Juan<BR> - retro sounding =
dance music=20
that owes much to the eighties. <BR> All four mixes =
keep the=20
punky, funky thing going on plus there<BR> is a hint =
of "old=20
school" electro and shouty vocals (in differing<BR> =20
degrees). </DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> KARRI O. - ROCKSOUL - PLONG - 12" =
(PLONG!17)<BR> =20
The main track here is a toothsome number with a funky,=20
elastic<BR> sounding retro bassline and a sort of =
Electro /=20
House crossover<BR> sound. Very accessible, but very =
good as=20
well. The flip sees a<BR> far more underground feel =
taking=20
control and a really nice minimalism<BR> that should =
see it=20
garnering quite a few fans. Good stuff, then,<BR> =
generally=20
and well worth a check.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> MARK HENNING - FINAL SNATCH EP - FRANKIE REC - 12"=20
(FRANKIEREC10)<BR> Best Frankie release for a while =
here with=20
four superb tracks<BR> by Mark Henning (previously =
found on=20
Freude Am Tanzen). Deep,<BR> flat, funked-out Tech =
grooves=20
with a nicely wiggly minimalism<BR> and bassy sounds. =
Rough,=20
ready and made for making people dance.<BR> An =
absolute=20
corker!</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> MATIAS AGUAYO - DE PAPEL - KOMPAKT - 12"=20
(KOMPOP9)<BR> Quite a few people having been touting =
this=20
single (and the forthcoming<BR> album) by Closer =
Music's=20
Matias Aguayo as the next big thing from<BR> Kompakt =
and on=20
the evidence of this it's not hard to see why.<BR> =
He's=20
blended up such a deep set of sounds that it transcends=20
simply<BR> being Techno, House or Cologne Pop. There's =
a real=20
emotion behind<BR> the tracks and, although they =
groove, they=20
are nowhere near being<BR> disposable like a lot of =
this kind=20
of music. Simply brilliant<BR> and with a selection of =
funky=20
and minimal remixes it's a surefire<BR> winner. Deeply =
excellent.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> METAMATICS AND JOHN FOXX - FREE ROBOT - HYDROGEN DUKEBOX - =
12"=20
(DUKE140DJV)<BR> Wasn't sure whether this =
collaboration would=20
work or not, but<BR> by 'eck, it's a real winner. This =
is an=20
excellent dancefloor track<BR> that's neither electro =
nor=20
techno nor electronica yet strangely<BR> all three! =
Several=20
pairs of ears pricked up when we played this<BR> =
instore and=20
i'm sure yours will too. The B-sides are a little<BR> =
more=20
low-key but overall all three tracks seriously get the =
job<BR> =20
done and then some. Top notch. </DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> MISC. - LIKE MORNING IN YOUR EYES - SENDER - CD=20
(SEND052CD)<BR> Blimey! Another full-length album from =
Misc.=20
They certainly are<BR> busy these days and, guess =
what?=20
There's not a filler on here.<BR> Honest to goodness =
pumping=20
grooves with that 'Knarz' flava and<BR> dirty, dirty=20
basslines. There are lighter, more minimal =
moments,<BR> but to=20
be honest it's all about the dancefloor tracks. =
Solid,<BR> =20
workable... excellent stuff.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> MURAT TEPELI FEAT. PROSUMER - ON A RIDE - PLAYHOUSE - 12"=20
(PLAYHOUSE110)<BR> Prosumer gives us an ultra-deep =
House base=20
whilst Murat provides<BR> the vocals that ride over =
the top.=20
Moody, slow-paced tracks with<BR> tweaking percussion =
and a=20
bass-havy bottom end that will rock<BR> most floors. =
It's a=20
subtle beast, though, and has a subliminal<BR> flow to =
it that=20
grows over time. There are a couple of tougher,<BR> =
slightly=20
more obvious dancefloor versions, so you basically =
get<BR> all=20
bases covered. A wicked relase from Playhouse.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> PAN/TONE - SANS ADORE - VOLTMUSIK - 12"=20
(VOLT13)<BR> A really good release from Pan/Tone which =
harks=20
back to his eearlier,<BR> dubbier tracks on the main =
cut. All=20
crispy beats and lots of low-end.<BR> Jeff Milligan =
turns in a=20
splendid version with his customary jerkiness<BR> and =
funk,=20
whilst Falko Brocksieper and M.I.A. of Sub Static =
fame<BR> =20
give us a chilled out but still funking Cologne-style mix.=20
There's<BR> another track as well that features vocals =
and a=20
cheeky Electro<BR> / Housey kind of style. An all =
round=20
versatile EP. Check.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> PHONOGENIC VS FREESTYLE MAN - SUPERCOLLIDE EP - MOODMUSIC =
LIMITED -=20
12" (MOODLIM-009)<BR> Those Moodmusic Limited releases =
are as=20
strong as ever. This features<BR> two super tracks. =
Phonogenic=20
deliver a a cracking Electro-based<BR> House cut with =
superb=20
retro basslines and the kind of stabbing,<BR> synthy =
chords=20
that made the '80';s what they were. Freestyle man<BR> =
opts=20
for a more traditional, late '80's house sound that =
could<BR> =20
have easily been a Trax release. Excellent stuff.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> ROBAG WRUHME - WORTKABULAR RMX - LUCIANO + TONI NEUMANN - =
MUSIK=20
KRAUSE - 12" (MK014)<BR> Hypnotic freak-therapy for =
your ears=20
and body here. Luciano and<BR> Tobi Neumann both =
deliver=20
superb interpretations of Robag's original.<BR> Deep,=20
funked-out Tech sounds with incredibly intense =
attention<BR> =20
to detail and the sort of crispy rhythms that we've come to=20
expect<BR> from this exceptional label. Essential. =
</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> SLEEPARCHIVE - INFRARED GLOW - SLEEPARCHIVE - 12"=20
(ZZZ04)<BR> It's that time, once again, for a =
minimalistic=20
Techno bomb from<BR> the Sleeparchive crew. Four =
tracks of=20
finely honed, stripped-down<BR> perfection that has a=20
heads-down hypnotic flava and some of the<BR> most =
well=20
realised sound design for this form of music in a =
long,<BR> =20
long time. Mid-paced rhythms, reverb heavy noises... truly=20
superb.<BR> The fourth and best release in the series =
so far.=20
Killer and completely<BR> unmissable.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> SPEEDY J / GEORGE ISSAKIDIS - COLLABS 400 - NOVA MUTE - 12"=20
(12NOMU156)<BR> The latest in this series sees Jochem =
Paap=20
teaming up with George<BR> Issakidis. It's not as high =
octane=20
as you might expect, but still<BR> pretty banging, =
with a phat=20
old production and a lot of welly<BR> / bottom-end in =
the mix.=20
Definitely one for the Nova heads. </DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> SPIRIT - FATHOM - LOST - 12" (COS30)<BR> =
Very=20
straight-up techno affair from these mysterious=20
LOST-associated<BR> producers. If you are familiar =
with their=20
long-running party series,<BR> then you'll know what =
kind of=20
sound the name stands for. Quite<BR> heavy, tribal, =
and very=20
driving techno, that always has this monotone,<BR> =
stoic, and=20
very hypnotic feel. With the last few releases =
they<BR> now=20
started to always sneak a haunting ambient track ala old=20
Axis<BR> material on there, perfectly suitable for =
those big=20
break-downs<BR> during a peak-time techno set. =
Shouldn't be=20
missed in the working<BR> Techno-DJ's crate...</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> STAR YOU STAR ME - SWEET THINGS - MOOD MUSIC - 12"=20
(MOODMUSIC034)<BR> Slightly too commercial for my =
tastes, this=20
has a very floor-pleasing<BR> sound that's somewhere =
between=20
ordinary dance music and a more<BR> Electro-based =
sound that's=20
considerably more like the other Mood<BR> Music =
material. The=20
main point of interest, I guss, is the Ian<BR> Pooley =
mix=20
which maxes out the clubbiness. Definitely worth =
checking,<BR> =20
but certainly nothing out of the ordinary.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> ULTRAKURT - EN SHORT EP - FOUND SOUND - 12"=20
(FOUND04)<BR> Probably the strongest release so far =
frm Found=20
Sound. Ultrakurt<BR> seems totally at home with =
stripped-down,=20
minimal grooves like<BR> this and he imbues it with =
such an=20
irresistable groove that it's<BR> impossible not to be =
moved=20
by it. Stirling stuff. The flip has<BR> another killer =
little=20
Tech track plus, the piece de resistance,<BR> the =
Fusiphorm=20
remix... a staggeringly advanced track that rips<BR> =
out the=20
sound and replaces it with so much space and depth =
but<BR> =20
acres of dancefloor appeal. Wickedly good indeed.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> ULTRAKURT - LE CRICK DE BAMAKO EP - MINIBAR - 12"=20
(MB001)<BR> Well, there's been quite a bit of hype =
about=20
Ultrakurt's new material<BR> and here's the Minibar =
release.=20
Unsurprisingly, it's a clickin'<BR> good slab of =
minimalistic=20
and extremely funky Techno par excellence<BR> which =
fans of=20
Robag Wruhme, Telegraph, Found Sound and Microcosm<BR> =
are=20
going to absolutely love. The kind of grooves that just=20
make<BR> you want to dance. Absolute quality.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> VARIOUS - WE WERE FATHERS, BROTHERS, HUSBANDS AND SONS, WE W =
-=20
MEMBRANE - 12" (MEM006)<BR> First 12" release I've =
seen on=20
Membrane and it's a corking white<BR> vinyl slab with =
tracks=20
from Joseph Garber, Anders Ilar, Tomas<BR> Nordstrom =
and=20
Rutherford. Killer Acid Techno and Electro grooves<BR> =
with=20
some rough and dirty production that really cuts =
through.<BR> =20
Anders Ilar's track is particularly splendid and features a=20
gnarly<BR> 303 line that rocks. Cracking EP.=20
Recommended.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> VARIOUS - PLANET DELSIN SAMPLER EP - DELSIN - 12"=20
(50DSR/VAR-EP1)<BR> One of the most eagerly =
anticipated Techno=20
records of the year<BR> so far, and it reeally isn't =
hard to=20
see why. Delsin have reached<BR> their 50th release =
and with=20
this sampler EP and the forthcoming<BR> full-length=20
compilation they've come up with an absolute =
beauty<BR> that=20
delves so deep into the Detroit sound that you'd be=20
forgiven<BR> for thinking it was from the Motor City! =
The=20
tracks on the sampler<BR> are from D5 (formerly =
Dimension 5=20
aka John Harvey), Aroy Dee and<BR> $tinkworx. Just an=20
incredible selection of funked-up, deep as<BR> hell =
Tech and=20
House sounds that are full of futuristic grooves<BR> =
but with=20
a nod to the old-school. D5's 'Floatation Tank' is=20
particularly<BR> stunning and features a dense layer =
of chords=20
and an awesome rolling<BR> bassline... pure warmth and =
beauty=20
with pure grooves. A staggering<BR> EP and so =
essential it=20
almost hurts.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> VARIOUS - CONCRETE SOUL FUTURE INSTRUMENTALS - FINEST BLEND =
- 12"=20
(FINE1205004)<BR> Wicked, wicked release from Finest =
Blend=20
which sees the Concrete<BR> Soul crew delivering =
tracks of=20
pure Techno and House with a purist,<BR> Motor City =
funk=20
that's just stunning. Wild Planet's Simon Hartley<BR> =
and=20
Kenny Black team up under a number of guises to give us=20
some<BR> serious grooves with warmth, depth, flava =
and, most=20
importantly,<BR> a lush Detroit feel. Be it 4/4 or =
Electro=20
based, it's all perfectly<BR> in place and easily =
tweaks my=20
bits. I have a strong suspicion<BR> it'll be tweaking =
yours as=20
well! Essential.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> VENOM 18 - MYSTERY ORGANISATION - STRANGE LIFE RECORDS - 12" =
(SLR005)<BR> I believe that this could well be =
Legowelt's own=20
label and, by<BR> gum, if he hasn't come up with a =
rip-roaring=20
7 track EP. Varies<BR> between Creme -style =
Electro-Disco=20
grooves to a more ambient,<BR> soundscapey, but =
infintely=20
retro style. Along the way there are<BR> some deeply =
excellent=20
Electro tracks. I honestly think this is<BR> one of =
the best=20
records of this style for quite some time so I'd<BR> =20
definitely recommend you have a listen as soon as you can.</DIV>

<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> SHYZA MINELLI - TAKE IT BACK - TUNING SPORK - 12"=20
(SPORK13)<BR> SHYZA'S SECOND EP FOR TUNING SPORK IS AS =
INSTANTLY GRATIFYING<BR> AS THE FIRST WITH IT'S =
CHEEKY,=20
ELECTRONIC SOUND AND FUNKED OUT<BR> BEATS. ALMOST HAS =
A DISCO=20
FEEL TO THE WAY IT WORKS AND THERE ARE<BR> DEFINITELY =
HOUSE=20
INFLUENCES GOING ON, BUT IT MANAGES TO REMAIN<BR> =
TECHNO AT=20
HEART WITH IT'S INCREDIBLY CRISP PRODUCTION =
VALUES.<BR> TOP=20
NOTCH.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> VARIOUS - NO COMPROMISE - CONTEXTERRIOR - 12"=20
(CNTXT12)<BR> 4 track EP from Jay Haze, Fark, Dapayk =
and Matt=20
John. As you'd<BR> expect it's the crispest minimal =
Techno=20
around with some super-fine<BR> production and deep, =
bass=20
heavy beats. Clicked-out sounds and<BR> glitchy little =
rhythmic edits provide all the movement you'll<BR> =
need on=20
this very hypnotic record. Recommended.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> WIGHNOMY BROTHERS - 3 FACHMISCH EP - FREUDE AM TANZEN - 12"=20
(FAT019)<BR> THE RETURN (AFTER HAVING BEEN ABSENT FOR =
A WHILE)=20
OF THE EVER-RELIABLE<BR> WIGHNOMY BROS AND LET ME TELL =
YOU,=20
THE A-SIDE IS JUST HAVIN' IT!<BR> THROBBING DEEP BASS =
AND A=20
SUITABLY BEEFY RHYTHM SHOULD SEE THIS<BR> ROCKING =
CROWDS TO=20
THE ABSOLUTE MAX - A TERRIFIC TRACK. ON THE<BR> =
B-SIDE,=20
SOMETHING MORE MELODIC AND LESS WEIGHTY BUT STILL =
STRONG,<BR> =20
WITH THE SET CONCLUDING WITH SOMETHING ALMOST RESEMBLING=20
VERY<BR> TWISTED BREAKBEAT. TRUST ME, YOU WILL WANNA =
HEAR THIS=20
ONE!</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>

<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> AUDION - JUST F**KING - SPECTRAL - 12"=20
(SPC-30)<BR> Everyone loves Audion at the moment and =
this=20
precursor to the<BR> forthcoming album is a nothing =
short of a=20
beast. Matthew Dear's<BR> original version is a gnarly =
slice=20
of minimal, Chicago influenced<BR> Techno with a =
wonderful=20
sense of not too over-the-top bangingness<BR> that's =
perfect=20
for the harder dancefloors. Alter Egos' Roman =
Flugel<BR> turns=20
in a rough and ready mix that ups the rawness in a big=20
way...<BR> Just what you'd expect. Quality.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> SEXUAL HARRASSMENT - I NEED A FREAK - JDC - 12"=20
(JDC0116)<BR> Classic slice of '80's new wave from =
David=20
Payton. A hypnotic,<BR> early Electro groove with =
sparse synth=20
sounds and basslines plus<BR> the 'I need a freak' =
refrain to=20
top it off. Instrumental, short<BR> version and long =
version=20
are all included. A great reissue.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> VARIOUS - THE HOUSE OF MUZIQUE - MUZIQUE - 12"=20
(MUZIQUE-003)<BR> 5 track stormer from Steve =
Poindexter's=20
Muzique imprint. Allen<BR> Wright, Melvin Oliphant, =
Chris=20
Underwood, Saturn V and Sun God<BR> (aka Hieroglyphic =
Being)=20
all turn in rough and tough Chicago tracks<BR> that =
still keep=20
a lot of soul as well as being really rather edgy.<BR> =
Muzique=20
rarely put records out, but when they do they're =
always<BR> =20
essential!</DIV>

<DIV> KONRAD BLACK & GHOSTMAN - MEDUSA SMILE - WAGON REPAIR - =
12"=20
(WAG006)<BR> Big new track from Mathew Jonson's Wagon =
Repair=20
label which sees<BR> Konrad Black reprising his =
fantastic=20
first EP with this killer<BR> two tracks. Deep and =
dark Techno=20
/ House grooves with the sort<BR> of Electro =
influences to the=20
bassline and percussion that this<BR> label excells =
at. A=20
nice, subtle vocal sits on top of the track<BR> on one =
side=20
and adds a layer of depth and moodiness which =
really<BR> suits=20
the hypnotic grooves. Top notch gear.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> LUSINE - INSIDE/OUT EP - GHOSTLY INTERNATIONAL - 12"=20
(GI-47)<BR> The long awaited new Lusine EP is a =
beautiful=20
piece of work all<BR> round. His trademark production =
skills=20
are very much in place<BR> and the flat, funky, but =
incredibly=20
intricate rhythms are, to<BR> be honest, completely =
superb.=20
Musicall it's incredibly strong<BR> as well with =
wonderfully=20
dense chords and melodic interludes.<BR> Couple that =
with a=20
couple of vocal moments and you've got a very,<BR> =
very tasty=20
record all round. Highly recommended.</DIV>

<DIV> DEXTER - D-FUNKED - CLONE - 12" (C#39)<BR> =
This=20
isn't what i expected, which is why you'll find it in =
the<BR> =20
house category and not the electro section. What we have=20
here<BR> is smooth, deep house music with a really =
lovely,=20
summery sound,<BR> phat production and lots of =
musicality. The=20
overall feel reminds<BR> me a little of Faze Action at =
their=20
peak. There's a sneaky l'il<BR> jackin' electro / =
house=20
crossover number tucked away at the end,<BR> but =
overall this=20
is one that fans of our blue corner should be<BR> made =
very=20
aware of! Excellent work. </DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> EDDIE FOWLKES - ISLAND - CITY BOY - 12"=20
(CBM-0019)<BR> A little corker from Eddie Fowlkes on =
his own=20
City Boy imprint.<BR> One of his best tunes for some =
time this=20
and a great example of<BR> how to make House music =
funky,=20
accessible, tribal and yet still<BR> incredibly deep. =
Both=20
tracks are wonderfully smooth but with a<BR> slightly =
rough=20
and raw edge that gives them that real Motor City<BR> =
feel.=20
Top stuff.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> OMAR-S - OASIS LP - FXHE - 2xLP =
(FXHE15)<BR> =20
Fabulous double pack from one of Detroit's finest new-school=20
producers.<BR> A seven track selection of versions of =
'Oasis'=20
which come in a<BR> variety of flavours. From ultra =
deep,=20
chordy House to a more stripped-down<BR> and =
minimalistic Tech=20
vibe. Production is as raw as you'd expect<BR> and =
there's=20
plenty here to keep you going. A superb collection<BR> =
of=20
tunes that would sem to be something of an essential=20
release.<BR> Just get it quickly, that's all!</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> PANASH - UNICORN - ATAVISME - 12" =
(ATA005)<BR> =20
AAAH, A PEPE BRADOCK PRODUCTION. VERY FINE IT IS TOO. THE=20
MAIN<BR> TRACK HAS DEEP, FUNKY, TECHY HOUSE FLAVA WITH =
A=20
DEFINITE 'BURNING'<BR> INFLUENCE IN THERE. WORTH IT =
FOR THAT=20
ALONE BUT YOU ALSO GET A<BR> SUPERBLY ODDBALL TRACK ON =
THE=20
FLIP. HALF JAZZ, HALF BEATS... A<BR> GREAT MIXTURE.=20
RECOMMENDED.</DIV>

<DIV> AZ - THE COME UP - FAST LIFE - 12" =

<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> DJ MOVES - A SAD STATE OF AFFAIRS - BULLY - 7"=20
(FU18)<BR> The Bully 7"s are a bit costly, but =
collectable,=20
always go, and<BR> are always quality items. There's =
lots of=20
potty mouth at the beginning<BR> of the A-side, but =
once=20
that's out of the way with, we move into<BR> =
traditional=20
Sixtoo / lo-fi leftfield Hip Hop territory. The =
flip<BR> is=20
the better track for my money, being more laid-back,=20
introverted,<BR> eerie and musical - very strong =
indeed.=20
</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> JURASSIC 5 - RED HOT - UP ABOVE - 12" =
(UA3088)<BR> =20
The J5 rock over a phat as you like rhythm from the daptones=20

those live=20
rhythms at the moment.<BR> recommended.........</DIV>

<DIV> NAS - MY WILL - WORD OF MOUTH - 12" =
(WOM021)<BR> =20

<DIV> PRODIGY (MOBB DEEP) - STUCK ON YOU - WORD OF MOUTH - 12"=20
(WOM016)<BR> Superb! 2 great cuts here, the a side is =
a great=20
club cut with<BR> speeded up soul vocals. The flip is =
a tense=20
dark number that has<BR> a clean & a dirty =
version. top=20
stuff!!!</DIV>

<DIV> BAIKONOUR - FOR THE LONELY HEARTS OF THE COSMOS - MELODIC - =
LP=20
(MELO031LP)<BR> Best Melodic album since Lucky Pierre, =
without=20
a shadow of a doubt.<BR> Bit of a welcome departure, =
too -=20
this is more Krautrock / psychedelia<BR> / post rock =
inspired=20
than anything else and works like a dream.<BR> Think =
Neu /=20
Stereolab meets Kreidler meets Do Make Say Think =
and<BR> some=20
of the Constellation crowd - yes, it's that good. Hints =
of<BR> =20
Can, too. You'll have to try hard not to be impressed by this.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> BELLINI - SMALL STONES - TEMPORARY RESIDENCE - LP=20
(TRR87LP)<BR> A bit more art-rocky than i expected =
from this=20
label best known<BR> for droney spacerock / post rock. =
Think a=20
more artsy Fugazi fronted<BR> by Patti Smith... =
apparently=20
this band contains members of Uzeda<BR> and Girls =
Against=20
Boys, which makes sense. A record that could<BR> have =
been=20
made at any time in the last 20 years but that's =
kind<BR> of=20
its appeal, i suppose. Have a listen.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> BLOOD ON THE WALL - AWESOMER - THE SOCIAL REGISTRY - LP=20
(TSR020LP)<BR> The Social Registry are carving out =
quite the=20
niche for themselves<BR> when it comes to American =
indie art=20
rock. This lot remind me a<BR> little of Unrest and/or =
Superchunk, ie. kinda post-punky, kinda<BR> lo-fi, =
pretty=20
rockin', a bit all over the place but proud to be<BR> =
so.=20
Nice.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> COMANECHI - NAKED - WHITE HEAT - 7" =
(OPE004)<BR> =20
There's a bit of a buzz surrounding this girl-boy two-piece,=20
and<BR> to be fair this isn't bad. If i had to draw a=20
pie-chart, i'd say<BR> this was 50% Huggy Bear, 30% =
Bis, 10%=20
Kenickie and 10% Tiger,<BR> which is probably showing =
my age a=20
bit too much for comfort. Butt-kickin',<BR> =
butt-shakin' rawk=20
and/or roll. </DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> FALL, THE - HEX ENDUCTION HOUR - EARMARK - 2xLP=20
(4004LP)<BR> Expanded edition of the Fall's =
groundbreaking=20
'Hex Enduction Hour'.<BR> This classic lp is often =
seen as the=20
band at their most brilliant.<BR> With Mark E. Smith =
at his=20
vitriol spitting best, twin drums backing<BR> up twin =
guitars=20
and an undercurrent of twisted pop sensibilities<BR> =
to boot,=20
this gnarling wreckage of sound put the band firmly =
on<BR> =20
every map on the planet. A must for fans & novices alike,=20
this<BR> version includes an entire album of bonus =
tracks.=20
Superb!!!</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> FALL, THE - ROOM TO LIVE - EARMARK - 2xLP=20
(40041LP)<BR> A long awaited re-issue, 'Room To Live' =
was=20
originally released<BR> only two months after the =
classic=20
'Hex..' lp. Acting as a 'fake<BR> left' just as =
success seemed=20
apparent, this lp second guessed<BR> both critics and =
fans=20
alike. Includes the classic 'Papal Visit'<BR> and the =
title=20
track 'Room To Live'. This edition also includes<BR> =
an=20
additional lp of rare and unreleased recordings. A must..........</DIV>

<DIV> FALL, THE - LIVE IN LONDON 1980 - EARMARK - LP=20
(EM307LP)<BR> Released in 1982 as as a ltd edition of =
4000=20
copies, this impossible<BR> to find and near legendary =
live=20
show is now available again thanks<BR> to Earmark. =
Capturing=20
the raw energy and unpolished charm of the<BR> band in =
it's=20
post-Grotesque, pre-Hex state, this previously=20
impossible-to-find<BR> live recording has been =

<DIV> FIFTY FOOT HOSE - CAULDRON - N/A - LP=20
(SDLP289)<BR> Seriously trippy lp with the much comped =
cut=20
"Rose". a headnodding,<BR> psyched out affair with =
lots of=20
analog synthy wibbles adding to<BR> the potent mix. a =
must=20

<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> FRANZ FERDINAND - DO YOU WANT TO - DOMINO - 7"=20
(RUG211)<BR> Personally, i think this is a pretty=20
disappointing new single<BR> from Franz Ferdinand - i =
was=20
kinda hoping they'd do something<BR> a bit more =
interesting=20
now and not just a generic rehash of what<BR> they've =
done=20
before. The tune and lyrics are very weak to these<BR> =
ears.=20
Mind you, i dare say this is exactly what most of =
their<BR> =20
fans want and the new album will be even more successful=20
than<BR> their debut. There really is better out =
there,=20
though....</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> JULLANDER - PHOBOS IN FUNKYTOWN - SUNDAY SERVICE - LP=20
(SUN08LP)<BR> There's been a tendency for people to =
overlook=20
this label, but<BR> let's hope this is the release =
that=20
changes all that. Mellow,<BR> jazzy post rock with =
occasional,=20
unobtrusive vocals remind one<BR> of the very early =
Kitty Yo=20
gear (when they were a very different<BR> label), eg. =
Couch,=20
To Rococo Rot etc. The likes of Hood, Billy<BR> =
Mahonie etc=20
are valid comparisons also, likewise Blumfeld. =
Well<BR> worth=20
a listen.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> LES INCOMPETENTS - REUNION / MUCH TOO MUCH - WHITE HEAT - 7" =
(OPE003)<BR> Hmmmm, this one's bordering a bit too =
much on=20
Ska-punk for my<BR> liking (y'know, that kinda shouty=20
half-spoken vocal you get that<BR> really grates at =
10am when=20
you've got a slight hangover?). "Deep<BR> In Session", =
who did=20
that? If only Steve Lamacq was here, he'd<BR> tell me, =
probably buy this and give it lots of airtime - ten =
years<BR> =20
ago. Some nice geese on the cover, though.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> LUPEN CROOK - PETALS FRESH FROM ROAD KILL - TAP 'N' TIN - 7" =
(TAP004)<BR> Poor Lupen Crook. Being "Tipped in the =
NME=20
Yearbook as 'One To<BR> Watch' for 2005" usually =
spells=20
instant death (anyone for Terris?),<BR> especially =
considering=20
the credibility of that publication these<BR> days. =
What does=20
it sound like? Well, this is acoustic =
singer/songwriter<BR> =20
stuff, a bit like Sondre Lerche meets Hefner but this isn't=20
as<BR> good at that sounds, nor is this chap as clever =
as he=20
thinks he<BR> is. Ok, but nothing more.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> MARS - COMPLETE STUDIO RECORDINGS 1977-1978 - IMPORTANT - LP =
(IMPREC047LP)<BR> Mars were the first, & most =
influential=20
of NYC's No Wave groups.<BR> This hand numbered, =
beautifully=20
packaged vinyl edition is limited<BR> to 1000 only. =
Being a=20
'complete' edition, it also includes the<BR> four, =
very rare=20
Brian Eno produced tracks. This lp is 32 minutes<BR> =
of raw=20
power & dislocated lyrical frenzy that today stand =
out<BR> =20
as the finest examples of New York's No Wave movement. =

<DIV> MILKSHAKES, THE - NOTHING CAN STOP THESE MEN - DAMAGED GOODS =
- LP=20
(DAMGOOD250LP)<BR> Following on from the tremendous =
'..In=20
Germany' lp, this album,<BR> recorded in 1985, has a =
more=20
varied playlist and more solid production.<BR> =
Although still=20
a rock'n'roll sound, the Shake's are pushing their<BR> =
envelope to the max. Anyone who is a fan of Billy Childish's=20
work<BR> simply must check out this four piece, one of =

<DIV> MILKSHAKES, THE - THE MILKSHAKES IN GERMANY - DAMAGED GOODS =

(DAMGOOD249LP)<BR> Damn good beat down garage punk in =
a=20
rock'n'roll tradition from<BR> Billy Childish and =
friends.=20
Recorded in Germany back in 1983,<BR> this lp is as =
solid as=20
they come. My personal favourites are 'She's<BR> The =

<DIV> SUNBURNED HAND OF THE MAN - COMPLEXION - RECORDS - LP=20
(R13LP)<BR> Although still drone-like as in the =
previous=20
releases, 'Complexion'<BR> seems less structured and =
more free=20
form. At times both warm &<BR> unnerving, this two =
track,=20
two sided long player is a wonderful<BR> compiment and =
a clear=20
progression from previous releases. Gorgeous<BR> cover =

too.........</DIV>

<DIV> VARIOUS PRODUCTION - HATER - VARIOUS - 7"=20
(VARS007)<BR> Back in stock after a prolonged absence. =
This is=20
an odd one, to<BR> put it mildly. The A-side is a bit =
like=20
early Beth Orton, only<BR> a lot more electronic =
(bordering on=20
grime, in fact... now there's<BR> a hybrid), whereas =
the=20
B-side is something completely different<BR> - a real=20
traditional / Steeleye Span-style folk number. =
Worth<BR> =20
hearing, i'd say! </DIV>

this=20
1970 LP finally just around<BR> the corner! This =
pretty much=20
became the Holy Grail of British<BR> Folk a few years =

contributions=20
from members of Fairport Convention and the =
Incredible<BR> =20
String Band, as well as string arrangements by Robert Kirby=20
(who<BR> worked with Nick Drake) and production by Joe =

Vashti=20
credited by the likes<BR> of Devendra Banhart and =

lovely<BR> =20
American vinyl repress!</DIV>

<DIV> BLACK DICE - BROKEN EAR RECORD - DFA - CD=20
(DFAEMI2148CD)<BR> Black Dice might technically be on =
a major=20
label these days, but<BR> don't think for a moment any =
kind of=20
musical compromise has taken<BR> place. These are =
dense,=20
experimental soundscapes and perhaps as<BR> strange as =
ambient=20
can get (i think it just about falls into the<BR> =
category as=20
Brian Eno defined it). Actually, this could well =
be<BR> their=20
finest moment to date - this is hypnotic and =
compelling<BR> =20
stuff that fans of their spiritual brothers Animal=20
Collective<BR> should really enjoy. What's ironic is =
this=20
could well end up selling<BR> a lot more than some of =
the guff=20
major labels try and force upon<BR> us, and quite =
right too.=20
Black Dice on EMI? It's the future of<BR> Rock 'N' =

<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> BOATS, THE - WE MADE IT FOR YOU - MOTEER - CD=20
(MOTEER::005CD)<BR> Second charming release from The =
Boats on=20
Moteer. I am going to<BR> quote... "We made it for you =
out of=20
love on a saved orphaned piano,<BR> it's rusty, out of =
tune=20
strings, beaten by dust covered hammers<BR> on an =
unstable=20
creaking floor. The vibrations of it's soul =
captured<BR> =20
one last time." Combine that lovely sentiment with the fact=20
that<BR> all the track names are people - the people =
it was=20
made for. <BR> OK and now for the music - =
fragile,=20
delicate and intimate acoustic<BR> and electronic =
music that=20
gets a big recommendation.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> BROADCAST - TENDER BUTTONS - WARP - CD=20
(WARPCD136)<BR> Broadcast have consistently produced =
excellent=20
albums over the<BR> years, and despite trimming down =
to a=20
two-piece are sounding as<BR> strong as ever. There's =
a=20
slightly more stripped-down feel to<BR> this new =
material,=20
giving it a slightly Velvet Underground feel<BR> to =
these ears=20
but it's the songs that stand out, and this album<BR> =
has=20
plenty of those. Extremely highly recommended, buy with=20
utter<BR> confidence.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> CAPITOL K - NOMAD JUNK - FAITH AND INDUSTRY - CD=20
(FAI005)<BR> Thankfully, this is a real return to form =
for=20
Kristian Robinson<BR> and probably his best release =
since his=20
debut on Planet Mu. Diverse,<BR> eclectic =
(schizophrenic,=20
almost), stuffed to the gills with ideas<BR> and =
invention,=20
this is energised electronic pop for the 21st =
century<BR> and=20
beyond. Check it out, it may surprise you. </DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> CHESSMACHINE - LIVE IN LOS ANGELES - L-NE - CD=20
(LINE_023)<BR> Chessmachine is a collaborative project =
featuring Line main man<BR> and sonic experimentalist =
par=20
exceellence Richard Chartier, with<BR> Russian artists =
Ivan=20
Pavlov (aka Coh of Raster Noton fame). Recorded<BR> in =
February 2005 it's a challenging head-to-head mirroring,=20
sonically<BR> at least, the early years of the Cold =
War. East=20
and West, PC and<BR> MAC... a real battle, and one =
that's=20
incredibly intriguing from<BR> beginning to end. Both =
artists=20
affect the others work and it's<BR> a constantly =
evolving and=20
shifting piece that ranges from dry<BR> drone-forms =
through to=20
rythmic, click-based, bass-heavy moments.<BR> On the =
way=20
though you get moments of harsh white noise, =
absolutely<BR> =20
reduced minimalism and plenty of static sounds. Not nearly=20
as<BR> heavy-going as I expected it to be, this is an=20
immensely satisfying<BR> CD all round. As ever with =
Line, this=20
comes highly recommended<BR> for fans of the more =
abstract end=20
of contemporary digital minimalism.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> CLUE TO KALO - ONE WAY, IT'S EVERY WAY - LEAF - CD=20
(BAY45CD)<BR> Licenced from Mush Records in the US, =
this new=20
Clue To Kalo album<BR> sees the band heading down a =
more=20
song-based path. Actually, this<BR> isn't a million =
miles away=20
from Caribou Formerly Manitoba, albeit<BR> more =
folktronica-y=20
(see also Iron and Wine and The Postal Service).<BR> =
Wouldn't=20
have sounded out of place on Melodic a few years =
ago,<BR> =20
this, either (which is meant as a compliment).=20
Psyche-folky-indie-tronica<BR> from the Static Caravan =
(also)=20
school of thought. Leaf is still<BR> ten, by the =
way.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> FUNCKARMA - REFURBISHED ONE - N5MD - CD=20
(CATMD130)<BR> A superb collection of remixes by the =
Funckarma=20
brothers. Absolute<BR> electronic bliss from beginning =
to end=20
which features versions<BR> of tracks by Plaid, =
Blamstrain, Mr=20
Projectile, Funkstorung, Xenoxeno,<BR> Speedy J, =
Heavenly=20
Social and loads more. Crunched out beats,<BR> dark=20
melodies... everything you'd expect from these top=20
producers.<BR> Highly recommended. </DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> HAUSCHKA - THE PREPARED PIANO - KARAOKE KALK - CD=20
(KALKCD31)<BR> Lovely piano music from Hauschka - =
stuffed to=20
the gills with feeling,<BR> this is the sort of music =
that=20
gets used to great effect in films<BR> - moments of =
quiet=20
reflection (often when it is raining or has<BR> just =
stopped=20
raining). It is so simple, but so effective. =20
Really<BR> beautiful music. Recommended - one of =
Karaoke=20
Kalk's best for<BR> some time.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> JACKSON & HIS COMPUTER BAND - SMASH - WARP - CD=20
(WARPCD137)<BR> An apt title, as not only should this =
be a=20
smash hit but it does<BR> rather smash genres =
together...=20
imagine Daft Punk meets Vitalic<BR> meets the =
cutting-up=20
skills and beat-driven brutality of Aphex<BR> in a bad =
mood=20
and you're getting there. In theory, this stuff<BR> =
should be=20
a b*tch to dance to, but just you try keeping =
still<BR> - it's=20
an absolute beast. It takes some getting used to, but=20
trust<BR> me, this is one of the good time party =
records of=20
the year. Wicked.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> MARC HELLNER - MARRIAGES - PEACEFROG - CD=20
(PFG068CD)<BR> How interesting that the CD of this has =
a=20
rather different, Turner-influenced<BR> artwork! A few =
weeks=20
ago, we reviewed a mini-album by Marc Hellner<BR> and =
this=20
full-lengther complements that perfectly. =
Co-produced<BR> by=20
Telefon Tel Aviv, this is a lush slice of semi-shoegazing=20
electronic<BR> pop that has a definite Ulrich Schnauss =
and/or=20
Khonnor feel about<BR> it, not to mention some of the =
Resonant=20
artists (to these ears,<BR> for example Blindfold or =
Port=20
Royal). Seriously mellow, definitely<BR> =
recommended.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> MIKE BOO - DUNHILL DRONE COMMITTEE - ALPHA PUP - CD=20
(APR-010)<BR> Don't know who Mike Boo is, but from the =
outset=20
this sounded really<BR> promising. It's a =
strange=20
combination of atmospheric soundscape<BR> / film =
soundtrack=20
sounding pieces that come from the darker side<BR> of =
music;=20
and jazz based meanderings that would be ideal as =
a<BR> =20
musical backdrop to a grubby basement bar. If it doesn't=20
appeal<BR> at first, persevere, because as a whole =
album this=20
really does<BR> hit the spot. </DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> PIANA - EPHEMERAL - HAPPY - CD =
(HAP003)<BR> Happy=20
is a label that pretty much lives up to its name! As =
part<BR> =20
of the 12k empire (although not actually run by Taylor=20
Deupree)<BR> you can imagine that there's a degree of =
quality=20
to it, both musically<BR> and artistically that's =
certainly=20
enviable. Piana are a four-piece<BR> act using cello, =
violin,=20
guitar, piano and organ , along with<BR> a certain =
amount of=20
electronic manipulation and processing to<BR> conjure =
up a=20
mellow, laid-back and infinitely pleasing style =
that;s<BR> =20
warm, friendly and very endearing. Similar at times to the=20
work<BR> that Taylor did with Eisi or some of the Plop =
and=20
Noble material.<BR> It's light and airy and very jolly =
and=20
comes completely recommended.<BR> Very nice =
indeed.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> SIXTOO - DURATION - DVD - 1200 HOBOS - CD=20
(FUCD004)<BR> Another repress of sixtoo's most sought =
after=20
work here. This<BR> time it comes with a DVD? Couldnt =
tell you=20
whats on it as we dont<BR> have a player here! Still, =
i 'm=20
sure the fans will know what it's<BR> about!! </DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> STEVE RODEN - AIRFORMS - L-NE - CD =
(LINE_022)<BR> =20
Line introduce a new line (Ho-Ho) in packaging here with=20
picture<BR> sleeves and colour coding... looks really =
nice,=20
actually, after<BR> my intial reservations. Musically, =
Steve=20
Roden once again provides<BR> a tour-de-force with =
this=20
wonderful installation piece. The wrok<BR> was =
inspired by a=20
group of houses designed by Wallace Neff in<BR> the =
1940's=20
using a process he called 'Airform Construction'. =
The<BR> =20
buildings were created using a technique of spraying=20
concrete<BR> over small balloons and the musical =
aspects=20
conceived from this<BR> are a sonic reflection of the =
idea of=20
living in an organically<BR> formed space. Intriguing, =
certainly, and as it turns out, one<BR> of Rodens most =
engaging pieces to date. It ebbs and flows using<BR> a =
superbly melodic drone sound that builds and grows over=20
the<BR> course of the CD gradually adding twinkling =
sound in=20
the background<BR> and extra layers of texture. it's =
dramatic,=20
but amazingly soothing<BR> at the same time and really =
comes=20
into its own on a good pair<BR> of headphones. =
Sublimely=20
produced and beautifully realised. In<BR> essence, =
highly=20
recommended.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> TIM 'LOVE' LEE - AGAINST NATURE - TUMMY TOUCH - CD=20
(TUCH114CD)<BR> Tim 'Love' Lee is often an artist to =
be=20
discovered with his tongue<BR> firmly planted in his =
cheek but=20
this is a bizarre one even by<BR> his standards. Tim =
has=20
subtitled "Against Nature" by describing<BR> it as =
"Electronic=20
tone-scapes featuring members of The New York<BR> =
Aquarian=20
Men's Drum Workshop", and it's certainly one of his =
more<BR> =20
experimental works, perhaps a bit like letting Matthew=20
Herbert<BR> loose on a roomful of Moogs and then =
getting=20
Fennesz to remix<BR> it! A real curio and one you'll =
really=20
have to listen to to understand<BR> properly.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> VARIOUS - AURORA 2 - MERCK - CD =
(MERCK036CD)<BR> =20
Round two in Merck's 'Aurora' compilation series. A=20
wonderful<BR> selection of material (some previously=20
unreleased) from the likes<BR> of Deru, Kettel, =
Shapeshifter,=20
Twerk, Max Spransy and many more.<BR> A comforting =
example of=20
lush electronica, soundscapes and textural<BR> pieces =
to sit=20
somewhere just out of reach of your consciousness.<BR> =
Pretentious? Me?</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> VENETIAN SNARES - MEATHOLE - PLANET MU - CD=20
(ZIQ099CD)<BR> Oooh, heck, it's the Snares! I have to =
say i do=20
prefer Venetian<BR> Snares when he's on Planet Mu - =
generally=20
speaking his material<BR> is a little more varied and=20
interesting when he's on Mr Paradinas's<BR> label. =
Yes, this=20
is pretty brutal (obviously), with lots of =
frantic,<BR> =20
amphetamine-fuelled drill 'n' bass beats, sci-fi effects and=20
distortion<BR> a-plenty, but with more of a =
Squarepusher /=20
Aphex feel than his<BR> Peaceoff releases (for =
example). Wow,=20
wot a rush, etc!</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> VILLAGE ORCHESTRA, THE - ET IN ARCADIA EGO - HIGHPOINT =
LOWLIFE - CD=20
(HPLL014CD)<BR> Fair play to Highpoint Lowlife, they =
really=20
are consistently coming<BR> up with supreme releases. =
The=20
Village Orchestra (an offshoot of<BR> Marcia Blaine =
School for=20
Girls) seems very influenced by Brian<BR> Eno, but =
then who=20
isn't these days? The approach to ambient textures<BR> =
and the=20
more gently beat-driven tracks sounds very much in =
his<BR> =20
latter-day style, with maybe hints of Murcof and Shuttle=20
358.<BR> A very impressive album all round, highly=20
recommended.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> XILLON - PREQUIEM - COMPONENT - CD =

Beaty electronica that will sit perfectly with your=20

<DIV> ALVA NOTO + RYUICHI SAKAMOTO - INSEN - RASTER NOTON - CD=20
(R-N065)<BR> Back in stock! Sometimes, something comes =
along=20
that transcends<BR> the boundaries of musical genre =
and=20
confounds your ideas of who<BR> should be listening to =
what.=20
"Vrioon" by Alva Noto (aka Carsten<BR> Nicolai) and =
Ryuichi=20
Sakamoto was one such release. it's unique<BR> blend =
of=20
Carsten's micro electronic processing and ryuichi's=20
delicious<BR> piano playing ensured that a whole host =
people=20
enjoyed its dulcet<BR> tones. This follow-up is =
simply, more=20
of the same. Anyone who<BR> bemoans that fact though =
is=20
missing the point by a large margin,<BR> as this =
stands=20
equally tall as the first album. if anyything,<BR> =
this is=20
actually a more melodic piece of work and doesn't =
rely<BR> so=20
heavily on the repetitive piano motifs of "Vrioon". There=20
is<BR> a more tangiable feeling of tunefeulness here =
and it=20
absolutely,<BR> 100% suits the ultra-refined and =
stripped down=20
tones and textures<BR> that lie underneath. Quite =
frankly=20
everyone should own a copy<BR> of this staggeringly =
beautiful=20
piece of work. possibly one of<BR> the most essential =
releases=20
of the year. (I think he likes it!!<BR> - ed)</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> ALVA NOTO + RYUICHI SAKAMOTO - VRIOON - RASTER NOTON - CD=20
(R-N050)<BR> 50th release for Raster Noton sees the =
pairing of=20
these two talented<BR> artists in what has become =
something of=20
a watershed recording.<BR> At heart it's a gentle, =
intricate=20
and subtle blend of electronics<BR> and acoustic piano =
that=20
weaves and hypnotizes with Sakamoto providing<BR> the =
piano=20
phrases and Carsten Nicolai gently processing and=20
manipulating<BR> them underneath. The use of =
identifiable=20
motifs works like a dream<BR> and really gives the =
listener=20
something to lock onto (as if you<BR> needed to). =
Beautifully=20
melancholy and aching with divine melodies,<BR> this =
release=20
is infinitely special and if you own the second=20
collaboration<BR> 'Insen' you should treat this as a =
must have=20
CD. Simply awesome.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> POLMO POLPO / ARTHUR RUSSELL - KISS ME AGAIN AND AGAIN -=20
INTR_VERSION - CD (INEP002)<BR> LOVELY LITTLE ODDITY =
THIS=20
WHICH COMES ON A 3" CD PRESSED ONTO<BR> A CLEAR 5" CD =
(IF YOU=20
SEE WHAT I MEAN!). POLMO POLPO GETS HIS<BR> HANDS ON =
THIS=20
CLASSIC OLD ARTHUR RUSSELL TRACK AND DELIVERS A<BR> =
HYPNOTIC=20
21 MINUTE VERSION COMPLETE WITH SOUNDSCAPE MOMENTS =
COUPLED<BR> =20
WITH DELICIOUSLY FUNKY BEATS. DISCO, DONE THE TEXTURAL WAY!=20
A<BR> NOVEL APPROACH AND ONE THAT WORKS A TREAT. DON'T =
HANG=20
ABOUT AS<BR> THIS IS VERY LIMITED INDEED!</DIV>

<DIV> DJ KOZE - KOSI COMES AROUND - KOMPAKT - CD=20
(KOMCD43)<BR> DJ Koze is a superb techno artist and =
this=20
highly anticipated<BR> album sees him at the peak of =
his=20
powers. To just dismiss this<BR> as another minimal =
techno=20
record would be wrong - his crisp, deep<BR> production =
style=20
coupled with a penchant for wicked grooves makes<BR> =
him stand=20
out from the ever-swelling crowd. Add to that a =
real<BR> =20
musicality, playfulness and lightness of touch all too often=20
missing<BR> from the genre and you can't ask for more. =
The=20
perfect blend of<BR> techno and electronica, this =
comes=20
highly, highly recommended.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> MR. OIZO - MOUSTACHE (HALF A SCISSOR) - F COMMUNICATIONS - =
CD=20
(F230CD)<BR> Anyone that heard last year's "Stunt" =
single=20
(included on here)<BR> won't be too surprised to hear =
this is=20
a shocking good piece of<BR> work from Quentin =
Dupieux. If=20
you're into Vitalic, Jackson & His<BR> Computer =
Band, Daft=20
Punk etc stop what you're doing right now<BR> and =
check this=20
out - pound for pound this is a better album than<BR> =
any of=20
those. Cut up but still incredibly tight and funky, =
this<BR> =20
has the power to devastate dancefloors with its deep=20
futuristic<BR> electro sound. Totally ace stuff - you=20
need!</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> ROB DA BANK - FABRIC 24 - FABRIC - CD=20
(FABRIC47)<BR> I'm as suspicious of Rob Da Bank as =
anyone, but=20
fair play, this<BR> is a pretty good mix and quite =
Smallfish=20
friendly, actually. Michael<BR> Mayer, Nathan Fake, =
Triola=20
(Wighnomy Bros remix), Plastikman,<BR> Whitey, The =
Fiery=20
Furnaces, Gabriel Ananda, Vitalic, Mr. Fingers<BR> and =
Frankie=20
Knuckles all make appearances, and although one or<BR> =
two of=20
the track selections are a little predictable, the =
overall<BR> =20
album is pretty hard to argue with. Nice.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>New Releases (CD): House</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> VARIOUS - A CLASSIC DECADE - CLASSIC - CD=20
(CMCCD111)<BR> Ten years on, and Classic are a highly=20
respected house label,<BR> and this double CD (mixed =
by Luke=20
Solomon and Derrick "L." Carter)<BR> is a solid =
reminder as to=20
why. Losoul, Greens Keepers, Isolee,<BR> Metro Area, =
Gemini=20
(Nil points!), Markus Nikolai, Roy Davis Jr,<BR> Roy =
Davis Sr=20
(not really), Herbert, Blaze and numerous others<BR> =
all get=20
down and get with it.</DIV>

<DIV>New Releases (CD): Hip Hop</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> NICKY SPESH - THE WORLD I KNOW - BARRY'S BOOTLEGS - CD=20
(SP002)<BR> The men responsible for DJ Rubbish and =
Cassetteboy=20
bring you this<BR> latest discovery in British Hip =
Hop.=20
Tongues are firmly planted<BR> in cheeks here (i mean, =
just=20
look at the cover!). Very nearly<BR> released on Big =
Dada,=20
according to the press blurb (True or false?<BR> You =
decide!).=20
Nice and cheap (in every sense!).</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>New Releases (CD): Guitar Based</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> A CERTAIN RATIO - LIVE IN GRONINGEN 26.10.1980 - LTM - CD=20
(LTMCD2443)<BR> A complete live show by ACR, recorded =
by=20
Martin Hannett and Jon<BR> Hurst. This digital =
remaster=20
includes two bonus tracks, again<BR> dating from 1980, =
taken=20
from rare singles and compilation albums.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> BAIKONOUR - FOR THE LONELY HEARTS OF THE COSMOS - MELODIC - =
CD=20
(MELO031CD)<BR> Best Melodic album since Lucky Pierre, =
without=20
a shadow of a doubt.<BR> Bit of a welcome departure, =
too -=20
this is more Krautrock / psychedelia<BR> / post rock =
inspired=20
than anything else and works like a dream.<BR> Think =
<DIV> BELLINI - SMALL STONES - TEMPORARY RESIDENCE - CD=20
(TRR87CD)<BR> A bit more art-rocky than i expected =
from this=20
label best known<BR> for droney spacerock / post rock. =
Think a=20
more artsy Fugazi fronted<BR> by Patti Smith... =
apparently=20
this band contains members of Uzeda<BR> and Girls =
Against=20
Boys, which makes sense. A record that could<BR> have =
been=20
made at any time in the last 20 years but that's =
kind<BR> of=20
its appeal, i suppose. Have a listen.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> BLOOD ON THE WALL - AWESOMER - THE SOCIAL REGISTRY - CD=20
(TSR020CD)<BR> The Social Registry are carving out =
quite the=20
niche for themselves<BR> when it comes to American =
indie art=20
rock. This lot remind me a<BR> little of Unrest and/or =
Superchunk, ie. kinda post-punky, kinda<BR> lo-fi, =
pretty=20
rockin', a bit all over the place but proud to be<BR> =
so.=20
Nice.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> DEVENDRA BANHART - CRIPPLE CROW - XL - CD=20
(XLCD192)<BR> Ever prolific, Devendra releases another =
two=20
albums worth of material<BR> only on the one disc this =
year!=20
This is more of a full-band effort,<BR> bringing =
together 22=20
wonderfully laid-back, hazy, mellow songs<BR> in his =
ever=20
personable, unique style. Fans of his previous =
works<BR> will=20
love this, and the slightly more accessible feel of =
this<BR> =20
LP will no doubt attract many a new devotee as well. The=20
songs<BR> in Spanish are a particular joy. Another =
wonderful=20
release from<BR> this huge talent.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> JULLANDER - PHOBOS IN FUNKYTOWN - SUNDAY SERVICE - CD=20
(SUN08CD)<BR> There's been a tendency for people to =
overlook=20
this label, but<BR> let's hope this is the release =
that=20
changes all that. Mellow,<BR> jazzy post rock with =
occasional,=20
unobtrusive vocals remind one<BR> of the very early =
Kitty Yo=20
gear (when they were a very different<BR> label), eg. =
Couch,=20
To Rococo Rot etc. The likes of Hood, Billy<BR> =
Mahonie etc=20
are valid comparisons also, likewise Blumfeld. =
Well<BR> worth=20
a listen.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> NINA WALSH - MEMO'S - C-PIJ - CD =
(CPIJ05)<BR> Nice=20
CD from this member of Add N to X here. A wonderful mix =
of<BR> =20
Folk, songs & electronics creating a haunting darkish=20
atmosphere<BR> is not a million miles from some of the =
add N=20
to x output. Some<BR> nice instrumentation here well =
worth a=20
listen...... p.s. Apparently<BR> she is not in Add N =
to X. i=20
have been racking my brains trying<BR> to remember who =
told me=20
she was, but i just cant. she may have<BR> owned one =
of thier=20
records though, you never know.........unless<BR> you=20
do..........</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> ORCHIDS, THE - LYCEUM + SINGLES - LTM - CD=20
(LTMCD2442)<BR> Great to see some more Sarah stuff =
getting=20
freed from the vaults<BR> after so many years - long =
may it=20
continue (Blueboy next, please!).<BR> Here's The =
Orchids first=20
album (originally released on Sarah in<BR> 1989), =
remastered=20
and extended with 12 bonus tracks from Sarah<BR> and =
Caff=20
singles. The CD booklet contains detailed artist=20
biography,<BR> photographs and recording information - =
everything you'd rightly<BR> expect. Still sounds =
great, too.=20
An absolute must for fans of<BR> twee indie pop=20
everywhere.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> VARIOUS / SUPER NUMERI - THE ENOCHIAN WAY - COUNTER - CD=20
(20507136)<BR> Ninja Tune's Super Numeri has compiled =
a most=20
excellent "sound<BR> collage" here (his wording!) of=20
off-the-wall, experimental pop<BR> mainly from decades =
gone=20
by. With tracks from the Silver Apples,<BR> Yoko Ono, =
Brigitte=20
Bardot, Little Richard, Fairport Convention,<BR> The =
Velvet=20
Underground, The Beach Boys, Shocking Blue, John =
Lee<BR> =20
Hooker and others (and additional snippets from everyone=20
from<BR> The Beatles to Ornette Coleman to Robin Gibb =
to Joe=20
Meek to Sun<BR> Ra!), this has got to be worth =
checking! Seems=20
like some Japan<BR> only import... more please!</DIV>

<DIV>New Releases (CD): Funk / Jazz / Soul</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> MISHA MENGELBERG - SENNE SING SONG - TZADIK - CD=20
(TZA7613)<BR> A nice cd of jazz from the dutch pianist =
Mengelberg. 9 originals<BR> here written & =
reciorded to=20
celebrate his 70th birthday. He has<BR> a wonderfully =
quirky=20
style that sits well in the trio setting....</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> VARIOUS - MIZELL - BLUE NOTE - CD =
(11615CD)<BR> =20
This production duo were turned around the bluenote=20
catalouge<BR> and dragged it into the 70's giving it a =
much=20
more contemporary<BR> sound. As soon as you here it =
you'll=20
know it. they created that<BR> funky fusion sound for =
artists=20
such as donald byrd, bobbi humphrey<BR> & gary =
bartz.=20
Every track here is a classic. An essential =
document<BR> to a=20
sound that influenced house & hip hop to a deegree. =
recommended....</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>Restocks (CD): Funk / Jazz / Soul</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> DAVID AXELROD - THE EDGE : CAPITOL 1966 - 70 - CAPITOL - CD=20
(3116182CD)<BR> Superb collection of some of davids =
gratest=20
moments. the edge,<BR> the warnings, songs of =
innocence, Don=20
Randi's theme from the fox<BR> aand more. all culled =
from his=20
capitol years. Essential.....</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> WANDA ROBINSON - ME & A FRIEND - BREATHLESS - CD=20
(52018CD)<BR> Wonderful cd of concious, soulful poetry =
with=20
background music<BR> supplied by julius brockington =
and his=20
band. Funky, jazzy and<BR> thought provoking, what =
more could=20
you ask for!</DIV>

<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> AFRICAN BROTHERS & KING TUBBY - AFRICAN BROTHERS MEET =
KING TUBBY=20
IN DUB - NATURE SOUNDS - CD (NSD116CD)<BR> A superb =
selection=20
of lost dub mixes here by king Tubby. Although<BR> the =
sound=20
is a bit scratchy in places (and all the better =
for<BR> it in=20
my book!) this is a pretty stunning selection of dubs,=20
props<BR> to the boys at Nature Sound....</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV>New Releases (CD): Experimental</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> BAR KOKHBA SEXTET - S/T - TZADIK - 3xCD=20
(TZA45011)<BR> 6 members of the masada family make up =
this=20
sextet who recorded<BR> some of John Zorn's =
compositions on=20
this 3 CD set. This is another<BR> of those CD's =
containing=20
music recorded around the man's 50th<BR> =
birthday.....</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> DEREK BAILEY - CARPAL TUNNEL - TZADIK - CD=20
(TZA7612)<BR> A considerable acheivment this cd. Mr =
Bailey,=20
who is one of the<BR> most influential experimental =
free jazz=20
guitarists over the last<BR> 30 years, has recorded =
this=20
despite having a crippling hand disorder.<BR> Each =
track title=20
signifies who many weeks after his accident they<BR> =
were=20
recorded. Ingenious.</DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV> JOHN ZORN - MASADA ROCK - TZADIK - CD=20
