Hi there.
The big news this week, of course, is the new Fennesz album on Touch.
It'll be available and shipping from Monday and, as you might expect
it's absolutely stunning. More info on that follows below.
Still no sign of the Grit CD just yet, but I'm hopeful that it'll turn
up some time this week but, other than that, there have been some
amazingly nice releases landing on the doorstep this week. A small
selection of my highlights follows and you can browse all the new
releases at www.smallfish.co.uk <http://www.smallfish.co.uk>

Fennesz - Black Sea - Touch CD*
*
*Christian Fennesz's last album on Touch, Venice, was a magnificent
piece of work that brought together a lot of his trademark tones,
textures and styles into one surprisingly accessible whole. I feel that
Black Sea can be seen in much the same way as it features a beautiful
combination of the deep, the warm, the abstract and the challenging and,
once again, these elements all come together to form a finely honed,
incredibly well crafted body of tracks that sounds as complete and
cohesive as you could hope. Incredibly detailed guitar washes with
grainy processing and melodic tones working their way through the mix.
The much vaunted (but to me slightly unfathomable) pop influences of
Venice have been stripped back and this album works in a much more
densely soundscaped way (with the occasional exception) - the delicate
charm of Vacuum, the high end fragility of Glass Ceiling and the robust
and epic swathes of the title track all spring readily to mind. However
you choose to describe it this is an utterly spellbinding album that's
going to be talked about for a long time to come.

Kenneth Kirschner - Filaments & Voids - 12k 2xCD
*The 50th release on Taylor Deupree's 12k imprint is a superb double CD
by compositional artist extraordinaire Ken Kirschner. It comes with 4
pieces over the 2 discs (including the magnificent hour-long March 16,
2006 and shows a broad range of his many talents. From reduced, spacious
works through to his trademark piano meditations, this album is a true
tour de force. Quite apart from being a landmark release in itself it's
yet another reason to adore the label. Challenging, yet beautiful.
Marvellous.

*Various - Listen - DB CDr
*I'm thrilled to have acquired some copies of this wonderful CDr album
from DB. Run by Jordan Sauer (aka Segue - you may have heard his track
on the excellent Slow Flow Rec compilation) it's a beautifully put
together collection of atmospheric, deep, ambient and just generally
lovely electronic music in the textural style that I adore so much.
Featuring tracks from Ryonkt, Offthesky, Entia Non, Son Of Rose, Corey
Fuller, Glenn Ryszko (also on the Slow Flow comp) and more it's an album
that I can't recommend highly enough. Lovely minimal packaging, first
class music and a limited edition of 200 copies. You'll want to check
this beauty out. Brilliant.

Level / Andrey Kiritchenko / Felicia Atkinson Spekk releases - In stock
*
*
*Yes, the Spekk CDs dropped this week and they've been as popular as I
expected! 3 very different sounding releases but all equally as
brilliant in their own ways, I'm getting low on stock of them so if you
haven't checked them out yet I'd get in there and have a listen. From
the deep, sculptural soundscapes of Level, via the organic / electronic
beauty of Andrey Kiritchenko, right through to the avant folk leanings
of Felicia Atkinson. Great stuff as always.

*Adam Pacione - With Wakened Eyes - Bee Eater CDr
*A lot of people may have missed this as a very small quantity came in
during the week, but I'm very glad to say that I've managed to snaffle
another handful which should be in towards the end of the week. For
those that did miss it be assured that it's yet another wonderfully deep
album that takes you on a long, soulful and wonderfully atmospheric
voyage through ambient processed sound. Adam's work is nothing short of
marvellous (yes, I'm a fan) and if you do fancy a copy of this lovely
CDr I'd advise pre-ordering a copy.

*Offthesky - Creek Caught Fire - The Land Of CD
*
*
*Yes! A new Land Of release and it's a lovely one too. Jason Corder
delivers an 8-track slice of pure and beautiful electronic music with a
slightly different twist to his work on Databloem. This is a more
minimal style and I think it really suits him. Imagine 12k mixed with
his more melodic style crossed with a bit of Green Kingdom's organic
influences and you're arriving at just about the right place. A great
piece of work and, as always, it's a limited edition.

*Various - Message From A Subatomic World - Hypnos CD
*
*
*Bit of a bargain here with this great compilation from ambient stalwart
Hypnos. Featuring tracks from Relapxych.0 (of Shapes And Phases Of
Ambience fame), Jason Sloan, Oophoi, Phaenon, Austere and more it's a
really icy, deep and very atmospheric selection of long, hypnotic works.
With occasional forays into a more organic sound but mostly
concentrating on the electronics this comes with a big recommendation
for those that like it relaxed. Great stuff.

So, as you can see I've been rather spoilt for choice this week and,
believe me, there are plenty of lovely things to come over the next few
weeks before Christmas (and a few little gems ready for the new year -
more about them soon!)
Have a great musical weekend and wrap up warm!
Peace.
Mike.
