Smallfish Mailout 02/12/05
Welcome once again to the Smallfish Mailout.
I've got an extremely heavy cold (along with the rest of the country) so =
I'm going to cut straight to the chase and the list of releases as my =
brain can't deal with anything longer. Sorry about that!
Take care and wrap up warm!
Peace.
The Fish.

Best work from Anthony Rother that I've heard for a long =
time.
This is one of his ambient works and I'm almost surprised that
it didn't come out on Fax with its deep, melancholy and slightly
retro feel. Dense textures and analogue sequences form an epic
sounding progression that has a real hint of Eno or Pete Namlook
at times. Very unusual to find music like this on vinyl, so if
you're a buff you should snap it up as it's a limited =

Restock. The debut release from Murmur, Bovill and, of =
course,
Meanwhile... a very promising new label from London. Using =
influences
from Berlin, Detroit and a certain degree, Chicago, both artists
deliver stunning, thoughtful, atmospheric and very engaging pure
Techno tracks. Kicking off with Bovill's cut which has a rolling,
bass kick-heavy flava that gives a definite nod to Robert Hood
in his absolute prime. Superb, minimalistic instrumentation keeps
the tracks fresh throughout with a series of subtly shifting sounds.
The second track has the purest of Detroit sounds with a killer
analogue sequence coupled with an offbeat kick drum. This has
the most simplistic feel of the EP, but works in such a hypnotic
fashion that you sson get stuck into the groove. The flip has
two more wonderful tracks from Murmur with a pad-heavy, string-laden
piece that, again, has an incredibly subtle offbeat groove to
keep it shuffling ever forward. The EP finishes off with some
serious Berlin-style sounds that have all the best elements of
a deep, dubbed out Basic Channel cut plus reverb-heavy stabs and
a cleverly arranged feel with a cool fade out in the middle which
cuts back in with the 4/4 rhythm driving through and giving it
a grooved-out dancefloor feel. You may have guessed that I like
this record somewhat! I do. It's brilliant and you need it if
you're even vaguely interested in Techno in any way. Just get
it!
